Sentech’s digital TV groundhog day

I'm gonna be driving a Ferrari,Rolls Phantom, Pagani Zonda and a Bugatti Veyron by March 2013 as a step-up from my 2012 Ford Fiesta.

I'm announcement fatigued from the DOC.

Who cares? Everyone is already using either DVB-S or internet. No one cares about DTT.

Much as you would like to think that nobody cares.. there are actually 30m+ people who do care, because they don't have DVB-S or Internet...

Just thing of all the spectrum that can be freed of we just can terrestrial TV altogether? Oh, and most of that 30m+ people are using DVB-S already - have you seen the amount of dishes in squatter camps? At R210 a year its not that much.

Dstv has a subscriber base of 3.5m (as of 2011)... TopTV has maybe 500k....

Rouxenator, please stop peddling your nonsense, the majority of the population in this country does NOT use DVB-S.
 
Nonsense?! Really - you surprise me every time. So how much do you think it cost so far and we still have nothing? DTT is a massive blackhole, time to face facts.

Should they one day switch off analogue broadcasts most people will get heavily subsidised DVB-S options because it will be cheaper than going for a DVB-T STB. You also need to take into account that some viewers will be on the wrong side of the digital cliff so for them DVB-S is the only option.

I strongly recommend that think twice before you just snap back at my because you think I am trolling. Right now you are the biggest troll here and your posts are not helping anyone.
 
i won't be bothered with DTT might get dstv light and join those 30mil+

Nope... you are now changing your argument to "If they switch off analog then it will make sense to use DVB-S".. from your original "Most people already have DVB-S" which is patently BS...

BUT, it won't make sense from the governments point of view actually.. DVB-S has backend costs over and above what DVB-T will have purely due to the transponder cost that will need to be covered to an overseas company.
 
No, I am not changing my argument. DVB-S is the preferred platform for TV in South Africa, it has been like that for 17 years and it will never change.

The cost of DVB-T, especially the roll out of the entire infrastructure, is not even comparable with DVB-S. Lastly, Sentech already has a DVB-S service in the form of Vivid satellite TV. Why on earth to the keep flushing money down the toilet on a platform that very few people will use?

Sorry Roux, it won't work. I have worked in the industry, most those people in squatter camps are still watching TV using a coat hanger.
An external aerial is much cheaper and easier to install than a dish, terrestrial is also portable.
 
The signal strength they get from bunny-ears or a coat hanger might be enough for a snowy analogue image but it will not be enough to decode any image from a digital signal. So there is DTT FAIL #1.

Secondly they are using analogue TVs so they will need a DVB-T receiver which alone costs more than a DVB-S receiver with dish and installation, there's your FAIL #2. Speaking of dish, they will most likely have to ditch the coat hanger and get a decent yagi aerial which can possibly cost more than going DVB-S, I'll call that FAIL #2.5

So where can I buy a DVB-S for R80? I can buy a DVB-T for R80, but you are saying DVB-S are cheaper?
