Android beat Windows Phone in speed challenge

After this made news, loads of people commented on how they where cheated in various forums/reviews.

For example:

I too was scammed by them a few weeks ago.
The prize: $100 Gift Card My Phone: Samsung Galaxy Nexus.
Task: Take Picture of Sign and Upload to Facebook.

They had me connect to their store wifi which took some time to get an IP.
They counted down and I took the photo and put the phone down on the table as it was uploading the pic to FB.
They were still taking a picture when my phone was uploading the picture. I could tell because I heard the shutter sound on their phone. I beat their phone in taking the picture, but the upload took forever.

After wandering the store, I took a look at their phone and did a speed test on the wifi. After multiple runs, we confirmed they were throttling other phones. The results were like comparing 3G to LTE.

After making a big stink, they agreed to a rematch. This time I used 4G-LTE and smoked their phone. I shouted done while they were still taking the picture. I won but their excuse was it has to be one the first try. I tried to get them to do another for a best 2 out of 3 but they refused.

I guess we will never know the truth about all the claims but I am sure that Microsoft lost a lot of karma yesterday, “just because”.

lol really? What a waste of time! We know Android is better! Why? 'Just Because' ;)

I guess it was a matter of principal to the winner as he placed the Laptop/Phone up for Acution and request for proplr to nominate for a charity to donate the money to.

I Got My Laptop & A Windows Phone. Both Are Up For Auction. 100% Of Proceeds Go To Charity.

Just a few hours after publishing a story regarding my experience participating in the Windows Phone challenge at the Santa Clara Microsoft Store, my article hit the Reddit front-page. It was not long before dozens of publications picked up the story as well.

Microsoft Evangelist Ben Rudolph (@BenThePCGuy) was kind enough to offer a rematch as I had requested. However, he publicly tweeted the following message this morning before I had a chance to respond likely due to a storm of angry tweets.

Ben Rudolph @BenThePCGuy 26 Mar 12
"Hey @sahaskatta , @MicrosoftStore & I want to make things right. So I've got a laptop & phone (& apology) for you. Email me!"

Sahas Katta @sahaskatta 26 Mar 12
"Thanks! Email Sent."

I exchanged emails with Ben regarding the matter earlier today and learned that a laptop and phone were aside for me at the Santa Clara Microsoft Store. I dropped by this evening and after spending a few minutes chatting with two rather extremely friendly store managers, I walked out with a $1,049 Hunger Games Special Edition HP Folio 13 and a $899 Nokia Lumia 800 Bundle.

I recently just purchased a new HP Envy 15 and I am rather happy with my smart phone, so I decided to put both of these up for auction on eBay. I will ship the highest bidder of each listing the respective device and donate 100% of the proceeds to a charity of with the help of Reddit’s choosing.

He should have asked them to install Linux on that laptop first.
Just because :p

Its things like this that show the world that MS still behaves the same as they always did, and they should not be trusted.

Because the actions of 2 employees obviously determines what the entire corporation is like.
Seems legit.

I expected this comment.

Because there's no way they were told to make sure that WP7 wins at any cost.
These 2 sales people did something underhanded all on their own, perhaps risked losing their jobs, just because.

Of-couse they are trained to make sure as many WP7's win as possible. MS is one of the biggest IT companies around, and they didn't get there by showing people that others' products are better. BUT, when this promotion originally started Ben (who did it initially) both won and lost, and didn't try cover up the few times he lost.

I guess you did not go through the countless off comments all over the web complaining about similar treatment. Sure this might be the 1st one that went big but its not the 1st time I saw a complaint on the matter.

Like I mentioned before we have no way to validate them all but the shear number of them makes you wonder. Its sad that they have to cheat while they are cheating, we all know the favor is stacked towards the one calling the activity to be performed.

But disabling the lock screen is that not just plainly cheating, athlete 1 can't start 50m in front of athlete 2?

If its something you can do with your phone out of the box I don't see how it can be seen as such, a better example would probably be 1 of the runners wearing clothing tested in an air chamber vs a normally dressed runner.

Besides the Microsoft employer calling the activity is already in front of the podium as they know what their phone is setup for. In the case of the competition in this case, they called for weather to be called from 2 cities, now tell me its normal for Windows Phone users to have 2 weather tiles on the front screen, and I will call you a liar.

What's the point? All they are doing is testing who can get past their lock screen faster... :duh:

This a lame way to attract customers to buy your product. Snake oil anyone?

Can't believe MS is going down this path. Are we seeing Apple turning to snake oil marketing stunts to sell iPhones?

I like the approach. The whole idea of a smartphone is to get access to information quickly.

not dive through 5 menus to get to the info you want.

of course Android can match the windows phone on 99%, but they are not competing with the Android market, they are gunning for iphone and especially blackberry users.

Ios and BB lack of widget/tiles really makes them last generation.
