Apple iOS game controller in the works?

Well there's already this : http://tenonedesign.com/fling.php (a analog stick that you attach to the screen).

But yea, since i've been playing more serious games on the IPad i've felt i can do with some form of touch-feedback which you only get with a controller. The ipad is ok with these casual games and even strategy games, but some of these games like DeadSpace , GTA 3 etc ....i'd like to have controller for those.

Well there's already the iCade and check it out! It's getting new designs for the iPad & iPhone.

I have something simliar... its rubbish. Agree, i haven't played 10 minutes of GTA3, it's impossible with a touch screen.

Oh dear, Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo are screwed

I hear this game controller stuff is another thing that Android copied from Apple.

Nevermind the fact that I can use the PS3 controller on my Tablet or Android phone and plug it into the TV via HDMI to have a full game console feel to it.

iPad game controller.... jury is out as to whether I think that's a desirable thing or not. I do think that rumours are rumours and always will be.

I am for this.

As it is, I have very little use for a tablet PC. This just might convince me to buy one.

What would make the tablet PC even more useful, however, would be to make it compatible to other gaming platforms meaning that a gamer on an iPad can game with gamers on other gaming platforms like desktop/laptop or console (be it Xbox or PS3).

In fact, why not make interplatform online gaming possible?

I say this because someone with an Xbox for instance might not decide to buy a controller for the games he/she plays already (with a controller).

I know it is a long shot.

All as mentioned on my blog about how the PC will be replaced in the years to come

Also Microsoft is planing to do just this With Xbox live as they merge the Phone/Xbox & desktop into one Xbox account for inter device gaming. Same with Sony's plans for the new SDK that will allow developers to code and roll out games to PS3/PS Vita and PS Certified phones.

What is a game controller gonna help for a platform on which you cannot play games ?

The problem is you end up carrying two devices in your hand in order to control your game. PSP and DS work because it's all integrated into one shell with the screen in the centre. But the balancing act to hold an iPad and a controller wouldn't work for me, esp with high intensity games.

Also I find devs are getting better at using the strong points of touchscreen controls and knowing what works and what doesn't. Even Super Meat Boy is coming to iOS, albeit with radically changed controls.

Heard about super meat boy this morning, can't wait.

This controller add-on would open up the world of non-casual gaming on the go, on an iPad which is already so useful.

I see what you mean about 2 devices though, maybe on an iPhone they could make the combination a single device but an iPad they'd have to make it pretty bulky to support the weight of it... they could mount 2 seperate pieces of it on the short sides of the screen like that razer thing but that will also be really bulky

Apple has previously applied for patents related to gaming controllers

Apple used to have a console, it's called the Bandai Pippin, no wonder they have some patents in this area.

They're already loosing ground badly.

Three years ago, Apple and Google were niche players in a gaming market long dominated by Nintendo and Sony. At the time, Apple and Google controlled just 19 percent of the U.S. market, compared to 81 percent for Nintendo (70 percent) and Sony (11 percent).

Today, things have changed considerably.

Now, Google and Apple dominate with 58 percent versus 42 percent for Nintendo (36 percent) and Sony (6 percent).
