SouthTel quiet on their failure to launch

Simple: if they can't launch then they must hand their license over to someone who can.
 
+1 rrh is correct if they cannot come to the party then why did they apply for the license?

We need competition and not companies doing things like this. Top TV is the same, launching a sub standard product

Monochoice is just laughing all the way to the bank at our expense

Likewise, I refuse to pay excessive amounts for ad-nauseam repeats & sport.

DSTV must offer a premium bouquet without sport at a reasonable price before I'll return.

BTW - Top TV doesn't have those incessant noisy ad breaks I found so irritating plus the picture quality seems better - or am I imagining that?

SouthTel would've been a lot like Netflix rather than DStv. It's a new market and can compete directly with uncapped ADSL accounts used solely for torrent downloads. I for one would rather use a legal service offering the oppertunity to watch the latest series and movies at a low price. Until then I will make use of downloading.

What license.

There is no license needed for vod,its video not tv.
 
I for one would have wanted this service. Its something I'm looking for in South Africa since I don't watch mainstream TV anymore and get most of what I usually watch online. If I had a satellite service like this offering good content on-demand I would definitely get this

Ya, but are you willing to watch pretty old movies/series's and other rubbish content? I've had TopTV for 4 months, to date it's pretty dissappointing!
 
I wouldn't be surprised if the likes of DStv were secretly creating "new" PayTV operators, gaining licenses then purposefully not launching them to eliminate competition :D

/cue conspiracy theories.

I had DSTV for years so their forever repeated "movies/series" had become rubbish content as far as I was concerned plus they bastardised the BBC and Discovery channels beyond recognition.

ATM Top TV is breath of fresh air and when it gets "old" at least I'm paying less than half of what a DSTV sub cost, the savings actually pay for my uncapped account which gives me the UK content I want to see.

Surely the licence part is the relevant part. They might not have their own licence, but their are piggybacking off someone elses?
 
I guess they are having trouble getting content. They should just do a deal with HBO on demand and license it here in SA, that would be enough to take the market by storm. Guess Multichoice have an exclusivity arrangement blocking this though:( Then add the NatGeo, Discovery and BBC doccie stuff for a winning VoD service. I'd be OK to pay R200 per month for that - but they would need to allow for old content to still be accessible, so you can run through the whole series from season 1 for example.
 
This was never going to happen. It was just another idea without the resources and business plan to make it work. It's surprising how many people misread these signs in this industry - not just the potential investors, but consumers as well. One needs to look at track record, backing, and often, simply the fact that it's worked before. If it seems too good to be true, is probably is.

Dude,that is what uplink stations do.They uplink (and some sell transponder space too) to whoever wants to transmit legal and/or unregulated content via satellite to an end point/s.Satellites are private business,broadcasting is a goverment concern.VOD is NOT broadcasting,it is NOT paytv but VIDEO and is treated the same as a video store,which means they only need clearance from the FPB.

Anyway,enough off topic.

Same as above,different licenses.

They did say they'll use a 3rd party VOD supplier or content aggregator,so getting content should not be a problem.Here's 2 examples.
