Cybersmart Uncapped - R50pm for 384k

Could it be related to those who call for tech support and support finds out that the problem is being caused by a different ISP. I believe that is the why the condition was instituted in the 1st place.
I've been with Cybersmart for a few years now also, and never had a warning about using another ISP

I'm pretty sure that^ is the reason. They allow you to keep your line with them and use another ISP for data, so why would they enforce afore mentioned clause (especially since they give you free data with you line also)?

Back to the original topic: I just spoke to a friend who switched from one of their capped accounts to the new uncapped 1Mbps account and he says it is incredibly slow. He claims he cant get a stable download speed of more than 20KBps. And the speed problems are not only with torrents. He is now thinking of changing ISP's. I haven't seen for myself but am just reporting on what he told me less than 30 minutes ago.

I'm not sure of what you want an image but here's an image of where they changed my account! Six years of customer loyalty to Cybersmart and that's what I got! Never had that problem with MWEB before! Anyway, I am currently a final year student doing marketing, and we have been told and taught numerous times that retaining a customer is cheaper and more profitable than getting new customers. So they like to shoot themselves in the feet!

Here's the screenie, enjoy ;)

Oh and btw, Cybersmart was my choice of ISP for many years. But lately I (personally my opinion) have been experiencing problems with speeds etc. With my MWEB account I get latencies of 13-21 on CSS. With Cybersmart I get latencies of 70-90ms! Youtube videos take a lot longer to buffer and browsing while doing research for my assignments also takes long! I have a better experience with MWEB!

I would also like to say the most I have ever used in one month on a 1mb uncapped account is 18GB, so why the F was I throttled?

But hay, it's just my personal experience and opinion. Cybersmart was great for many years, maybe I just expect too much!

Hope it helped someone

Hi

Couple of points to clarify.

1. The using another ISP log message, is something we used to check for 5 years ago. It is no longer enforced and is just logged because it is difficult to take out without effecting other stuff

2. The capped accounts have the same contention as the uncapped business. The contention is half the Home service, so your speeds on the capped service WILL be significantly better for large downloads. Another way to say the contention is half is saying that the bandwidth provisioned on the Home service is half that of business. This is not a secret, the contention is advertised (which no other ISP does) along with the service. For interactive stuff and small downloads, the service should be equivalent. I personally use the Home service on a 1Mb line and I can tell you I have yet to do a speedtest either nationally or internationally where i don't get 850Kbits. The service is targeted to be equivalent or better than other home services at a significantly better price and I believe this to be the case. If you say it is slow, please post a speedtest here, but please compare it to another uncapped service. To say you moved from a capped service (business bandwidth) to an uncapped service and now it slower is something to be expected and I believe this is the case throughout the industry

3. Regarding latency. If you are in Jhb and you are playing a game in jhb, then traffic gets routed to cape town and back to Jhb again. This is a technical limitiation of IPC. It is 25 ms to cape town , ie 50 ms return + latency to your premises of about 12 ms, so you would expect a latency of 60-70 ms. If you are in cape town playing in cape town, it will be 12 ms. Mweb has as pop in jhb , which is why the latency is 12mis. When we have a pop in jhb this problem will abate.

4. Finally, the uncapped service, is still being tweaked which is why we have not advertised it yet. Two weekends
ago there was a configuration error which completely messed up the service for that weekend . This problem was intermittent for the Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of that week, but is now resolved

5. Youtube is local and is 1ms away from us. The only reason youtube will not stream is if you are using nameservers other than our ones ie 196.41.124.10/11

6. These uncapped accounts are never throttled. The way it works is to look at all the connections and when the load exceeds 95% of the total bandwidth allocated to total Home pool to slow the largest connections down. So it is possible that the same user may have his large download slowed down, but his browsing is still fast. If bandwidth is below 95% of total, then these rules don't kick in . Obviously the higher the contention, the more likely the 95% ratio is reached and the more often these rules will kick in. If the helpdesk says you are throttled,
then you are not on the new service.

Regards

Laurie

Not sure about other guys on this forum, but the way I look at it is like this:
Most guys on this forum are on the more technical side of things. And our friends know this. So usually, in my community/social group, when people want internet advice, they turn to the tech guy (me).
So when we get feedback from ISPs on this forum, it's not just us that are being helped, but we become more equipped to help/advise our friends.
So hats off to Laurie (and the Mweb/Afrihost/WA representatives) that come on here and give us open and honest feedback regarding their products.

It does make sense, thanks for clearing that up! I stay in Potch in the week, and I'm in Vereeniging on the weekends. So when I get home Friday night I'll do a speedtest on my Cybersmart account. It will probably differ from the uncapped as they have put me back on the capped 2GB after I cancelled! I remember a few years back when SGS gaming servers were still popular and used a lot, my latencies with the Cybersmart account was great, and as I said it was in Vereeniging. Since playing on IS servers (as they are full of players and i don't know if SGS servers even still exist) my latencies went trhough the roof. With MWEB my latencies stay the same regardless of whether I'm in Potch or Vereeniging. I must also add that on my Cybersmart account, torrents donwloaded much faster. They were actually always at full speed.

Here's a screenie of a speedtest I just did on the MWEB account in Potch. Friday night I'll post a speedtest on the Cybersmart account:

Anyone else have more feedback on the 1mb package? Especially using torrents...

It officially sucks :-) I switched to uncapped, I couldn't download 300mb a night. I cancelled and went back to capped and immediately back to 3gb a night. I thought I would give Cybersmart another chance and switched back to uncapped and immediately impossible to download torrents at night... Now its back to cancellation... Thanks Cybersmart :-)

I'm going to try it - Only fair after the good service I've had. If it sucks - Afrihost here I come.

Need Laurie's response to this. The expectations are that in moving from capped to uncapped one can download more all things being equal! This is false advertising.

What is the official process for cancelling with Cybersmart? Takes at least a week to get a response by email....if you're lucky.

Cancelling is quite easy. I just phoned the callcentre and told them to cancel it. Boom... Done... You have to wait till the end of the month for it to be official... During that time they will call you to confirm that you really want to cancel and make you an offer you can refuse :-)

On the 1Mbps uncapped account. Been having inconsistent speeds, lately dropping to as low as 7kB/s via DDL or torrent. Browsing is slow and sometimes throws me the "Server closed the connection" error. I assume it has something to do with that 40 tcp connections at a time, so that only 40 people can browse the internet at a time, but I'm not sure. Emailed Cybersmart a few minutes ago and will wait for their response.

Another thing. My direct downloads die frequently, usually at night. Sometimes download speeds drop steadily from 70kB/s to 20kB/s, or even stay at 60kB/s and then the download dies unexpectedly.

I hope this is just a case of Cybersmart still tweaking the system, because if this is the kind of performance one can expect from the final product, then I highly recommend against anyone joining their uncapped package. If this cannot be fixed, then I may consider changing back to my 15GB capped package.

Also noticed just yesterday that the ADSL usage page on the Cybersmart site now indicates a 300GB per month cap with data carry over. Not so bothered by this since I don't intend to download more than 100GB per month ever, but I hope someone can shed some light on this.

Here are a couple of MyBB speed tests I did just a few mins ago, all tests done immediately after each other. Check the fluctuation:

I'll give more feedback when I receive a response from Cybersmart. Time for bed. :)

My friend sent me a screenshot of his data usage last week. An entire days downloads he got 1.8GB on a 1Meg line. He says it's been like that since he got it a few weeks prior. He is planning on switching ISP's soon because it doesn't seem to be improving.

That must suck. On 384k over a 24hr period it has been possible to achieve an average of 3GB
