MacBook pricing for SA - core confirms recommended retail price

So whats cores pricing for the 15" with retina? Im assuming the prices for "low" & "high" models are for the non-retina 15" models.

I think the "high" in that table is an indication of the "Retina" Mac retail price... It will retail for around the current high high 15" MBP price. No commitment on this from Core tho.

R23,999.00 or there abouts for retina.

Ye it is steep, but Sony would charge more for less. I really want to get one but at that price I will either have to import or get someone to bring it in for me.

I have a 2010 13" MBP which I imported from Hong Kong for just under R8000.
 
I have worked on an HP Elitebook with its Dreamcolour display... it is not nearly as high res as the new MacBook Pro... but it is a 17" Full HD screen capable of 100%+ of the Adobe RGB gammut, and a billion colour capable. Also very sharp display with wide viewing angles... it was an absolute pleasure and dream to use. THAT laptop cost nearly R46,000. It also had a 1GB Quadro DDR3 GPU, huge array of ports and docking station options and despite being a 17" screen, was reasonably light and thinnish with 6 hour battery life.

The thin and powerful MacBook Pro with its "Retina" display 15" will probably appeal to the photo and graphics industry on display and price alone. Perhaps not the CAD crowd, it is not certified for the applications used... but the display will be pure win. But, why 15" ? A 17" would have been marvelous.
 
speaking of imports, how do you guys gets past import duties? as far as I know, the duty is about 30% for electronics, MacBooks included.

And no, without going to another country or having a friend bring one over. I'm talking about ordering from an online store. Looking to upgrade my 15" april 2010 macbook sometime soon.

I assume then that Core will continue with their usual policy of illegal vertical market manipulation. Or is that an official aPPLe policy, and to hell with any national laws that get in the way?

On what electronics? There is a wide range of tariff headings which together could all be considered electronics.

I swear I thought Iread somewhere in an official document that the tax for general electronics was 30%.

So you are telling me that I can order one from overseas and pay substantially less that what Core charges?

Why do they even charge this anyway? I assumed that it was due to the tax...
 
Hmm, true. Yip Macs are expensive here, nothing new. So are graphics cards and anything that doesn't sell well. If it's any consolation, europeans and other countries also get ripped off. Nope, that's no consolation. :p

You'd think there would be an opening for another Apple vendor to undersell Core, but since they have an exclusive deal with Apple, we have to buy Macs retail, which means no profit. ><
