Standard Bank quietly launches mobile banking app

By Staff Writer | 27 June 2012

Standard Bank has silently and without much fanfare launched its mobile banking app for Android, BlackBerry and iOS, taking its spot as the third bank to launch a mobile offering for customers.

The app, called “Standard Bank Mobile Banking”, allows users to access a number of the bank’s services, even if you are not an account holder. Users will only be allowed to access accounts from linked devices.

The app makes provision for up to 10 devices to be linked to an account.

The app is free, and has no subscription fees attached – but Standard Bank does point out that “there are transaction fees on certain transactions.”

In terms of functionality, the app offers the following features:

View available and actual account balances;
Graphically compare the state of accounts;
See account balances;
Search for specific transactions and view provisional, 30-day, 60-day and 90-day statements;
Transfer funds between linked accounts;
Pay pre-loaded beneficiaries (added via Internet banking);
Buy airtime;
Send money to any other Standard Bank South Africa customer using just their cellphone number (if they are registered for Standard Bank’s Mobile banking service or their Standard Bank account number).
If you’re not a Standard Bank client, or do not wish to log into your account, the app will still allow you to search for the nearest Standard Bank ATM, view financial indicators, and provides financial calculators.

Standard Bank said that it is important to note that transactional features are only available to South African account holders.

The app can be found at the following links: for Android devices, BlackBerry App World, and Apple’s iOS (version 4.3 or higher).

And ABSA, the one's who were the first to respond to FNB last year by promising an app "soon", are going to end up releasing theirs last :D

Hmm, you can't add a beneficiary from within the app - so, it's more like a .mobi than a full app

The FNB app allows you to add a beneficiary on the fly - no need to log in via internet

I'm sure this functionality will be rolled out in time. FNB didn't have it either in the start.

hey guys

what improvements do u think need to be made to this app?

My app is working ok. The andoid one. except my credit card account stopped showing any balance. and any new benificiaries added dont show up

I've stopped using it for payments when I saw that I was being charged to receive the confirmation SMS, which is free via online banking. Can anybody confirm that this is no longer the case?
