Typo.

Wifi isn't a device, its a type of technology devices use to communicate wirelessly. It uses, in particular, the IEEE 802.11 standards.
 
Cisco is now:

- auto updating firmware on their Linksys routers
- you are forced to use Cisco Connect Cloud
- keep track of your network use and usage

Talk about invasion of privacy. I suggest everyone stays away from Cisco and Linksys kit otherwise Big Brother will be watching you.

As of last week, buying a new Linksys router means being forced to adopt a “cloud” service that offers no benefits, allows Cisco to snoop your internet history, and gives the company the power to control access to hardware you legally purchased.
 
I hope Telkom see this and pay attention, I really wish they would make a WISP type product which would effectively make every home/business WAP/ADSL modem a hotspot at the same time. Kind of a Femtocell type of situation. That and have a VOIP option to allow you to use your Telkom number over various networks, "roaming".

I think Cisco laywers messed things up, the idea is great - simple way to manage and upgrade your router for home/SOHO users who don't really have tech skill, they can use an app from the Apple store. Cisco are just adapting to how people consume everything already, Google already have all your browsing info as it is. The lawyers probably just tried to cover the legal liability as everyone loves sueing for the stupidest reasons in the US. The functionality and ease of use for this advanced functionality is the point of the Cloud Connect, not really aimed at techies.

In terms of the opt-out and auto-update mess, that was quite bad from a company like Cisco who are normally quite jacked up. they seem to be sorting it out now, but wow it was rather messy.
 
Does anyone in their home actually use Linksys? Didn't know it was even popular anymore. And auto updating firmware without your knowledge is a great way to invisibly cover any bugs before they become known. Just my 5c.

The WRT54GL model is very popular, mostly with other firmware. Linksys is now branded Cisco, basically all Cisco SOHO stuff is Linksys (they acquired Linksys some time back).

And why did they do this? Obviously to kill the product. What a surprise. Linksys you spineless bastards, I thought you at least had some fight left in you. PS Thanks for the awesome products, opening a door to free and open-source firmware for many other brands of users. Perhaps you felt that you did what you could. Don't let the love of money feast on your souls.

Personally, I would have liked to see Cisco *try* and squash you. Perhaps their products would have improved. It's all just a power-and-land grab from here on out, I fear.

At least there are two last hopes: Chinese capitalsm and community funded hardware projects ala kickstarter.com. Hurray!

I really don't see how you infer Cisco are trying to kill OSS, Linksys was in the low end of the market where Cisco didn't have a presence, they bought Linksys as it was for sale and a quick way for them to access a new market segment. If you watch their acquisitions that is what they do, spot an area they need work on and find a company to buy to not have to develop from scratch. I don't know if you have used other Linksys stuff before, but they are not all OSS friendly. Actually the main point that allows for this is which components are used, you can root many other brands' devices as well.
