Vodafone Huawei E220 HSDPA for Cell C and 8ta?

Hi,

I have an old Vodafone Huawei E220 HSDPA Modem which I would like to use for 8ta and Cell C network. Currently, it only allows Vodacom sim cards.

I was thinking of flashing this modem with custom firmware, but I'm guessing Vodacom might have blocked this somehow.

So, How do I get my Vodafone Huawei E220 Modem working for other networks?

This will install Huawei Mobile Partner on to your E220 and replace the horrid Vodabloat Stuff...

You will need to have installed the device (with its existing dashboard) to run the upgrade. Just ensure no Vodafone stuff is running when you run the upgrade... You only install the Vodafone stuff initially for the drivers.

Once complete, remove the device from the PC.
Uninstall Vodafone Software via its uninstall program or Control Panel.
Reboot your PC without the modem plugged in.
Once booted and stable, plug the modem back in and let Mobile Partner install.
You'll need to setup a connect profile, call it what you like but it has APN (Static) of internet and connect string of *99# this should work on all SA networks! So set as default profile.

If any step fails, just reboot and try again.
 
E220 will not pickup CellC's 3G network.
I dont know about 8ta though.

Your modem doesn't support UMTS 900MHz for Cell C. It should be fine for 8ta. If your maximum speed is 3.6Mbps, firmware upgrage will let 7.2Mbps.

One usually assumes that the device is network-locked when it doesn't work, but the truth is in most cases the problem is something else. I agree with the posts suggesting a firmware upgrade on the device (useful anyway) and a resulting software upgrade on the computer.

I had a vodacom unit and I did manage to get MTN working on it when I just changed the APN. If you don't come right, let us know what error, or error message, you are getting.
 
Some places you might pick up Cell C 3G as they do have base stations on 2100MHz (mainly in GP) 8ta will work without a problem.

E220 does support 2100MHz UMTS/HSxPA (3G) that was the first frequency UMTS (3G) was designed around.
But you are right in saying it does NOT support 900MHz UMTS (3G).
