APART FROM MAKING IT YOURSELF AT HOME, which fish and chip shop (franchise) do you rate as the best?

APART FROM MAKING IT YOURSELF AT HOME,

:(

+1

And Jimmys Killer fish and chips is prety damn good to

That place is the anti-christ of fish restaurants. Them and Ocean Basket. They make some of the worst fish and chips I have ever in my life eaten.

My favourite fish and chips shop in the world is still Mariner's Wharf fish and chips shop. Everything about the shop and the food makes for an incredible fish and chips experience...

Lol #fail!
Its one of their new franchises, Jimmys Killer Fish & Chips.

ah ok, my mistake.

Dj... come on... Jimmy's and ocean basket the worst you have ever eaten?
seriously, climb of that throne of yours.

Agree Ocean Basket fish and chips is bad.

I like those Fish and Chips shops, I think they called Fish and Chips, or Old style Fishs and Chips.
I only eat half though, the first half is awesome, cant handle the fat and oil of the second half...

The worst I've eaten was in the US, where fish and chips is actually mcfish and french fries. But Jimmy's isn't proper fish and chips - klaar.
Mariners Wharf is the best I've had in SA also agree with that... except for the blerry seagulls >:(

They're some of the worst that I've eaten. They are horrible, bland, frozen pieces of unoriginal, overfished and overeaten hake with soggy, bland, oily batters, intended to be drenched in lemon juice to make it edible. The worst I ever ate was actually at Brighton Beach in England, the supposed home of fish and chips. The fish was old and the batter was cooked in oil long past its use by state...

except for the blerry seagulls >:(

That's one of the things I love about it. :o Having to guard your food from dive-bombing, kak-squirting gulls makes for a pretty entertaining experience. Even the gulls know they're the best...

Probably some corner porra shop in CT area. Never really had anything nice from a franchise outlet.

Agreed. Their portions are more generous too. The problem is finding one in more "affluent" areas.

Maybe it is better to ask: what makes for a good fish & chips ?

Freshness of everything is probably the biggest key. That's what makes Hanbury's so spectacular - it's same-day fish caught less than a mile away off the Devon waters. Then using proper paper, getting the right 'steaming' quality, lack of oiliness and sogginess, and the texture of the chips is crucial.

Crisp batter; perfectly cooked, fresh fish that has steamed because of the batter casing; firm flesh white fish; seasoned fish; flavourful batter that is the perfect thickness; restrained tartare sauce; crisp chips that are still soft and fluffy on the inside; malt vinegar for the chips.

Mariner's Wharf ticks every single one of these boxes, and adds an experience factor to the mix too...
