Digital TV launch date pegged for South Africa

While some countries have completed their migration we have not even completed any proof of concept?

smh how long ago was this supposed to happen i will post same time next year in the Digital TV Launch Migration Date 2015 thread.

Welcome to South Africa 2015 WTF Are they not supposed to switch off the analog transmitters by 2015?

how about this idea....

kill all local analogy signal. no digital signal

subsidise the installation of sat dish installation (like they would have set top boxes) and make Channels available as free to air.

No Sentech, no local transmitters, no spectrum issues interfering with LTE rollout etc.

Not that simple I know, but a whole lot simpler than current plan. The current plan was made 10 years ago. A lot has changed since.

So what are we currently receiving, since I think some areas already have DVB-T2 signal coverage. Picking up 7 television channels (and most of the SABC radio channels) with our Toshiba WL753.

the presidency should issue a congratulatory message, for this new plan being announced

I can see the current analog broadcasts continuing until at least 2020.

Just for clarity: Sentech has been broadcasting a digital TV signal since 2008, albeit DVB-T. In 2010 it was suddenly decided that SA should relook its digital TV standard, and at the start of 2011 the DoC said SA would change to DVB-T2.

This seems to have put us back at square one. For that we can thank the Brazilians and whoever entertained their idea that South Africa should relook the ISDB-T family of standards.

Until it was decided to revisit South Africa's standards decision, it looked like South Africa could have made its self-imposed November 2011 analogue cut-off.

Maybe it was a blessing in disguise: we get to go straight for DVB-T2 rather than first rolling out DVB-T and then having to start an upgrade project. Maybe the delay will end up costing South Africa more than just following through with the November 2011 deadline and upgrading later... It's set back the release of the digital dividend which the mobile operators are begging for to roll out LTE

How does this affect the normal Joe on the street

The average Joe won't see the effects and won't need to do anything for some time yet, I think. Eventually some folks may need to put up new antennas, and will either need to get a TV with an integrated DVB-T2 tuner, or a set-top box.

and then we'll almost be there when someone decides that dvb-t3 is the coolest and we go back to indabas and formulating task teams to facilitate best practice action plans... blah blah blah...

they're picking northern cape to show the people that in the future they'll have tv? and flying cars? and little pizzas you put in the microwave and they grow to full-sized ones? and hover boards?

I can't believe it's this close, it seems like they're always delaying.
