Can anyone recommend a portable battery pack / charger to act as a power backup when travelling? I'd like to be able to charge my phone when I don't have a power point near by, such as when travelling. Something that comes back often on search results is the Energizer XP1000 http://www.portablepower.co.za/energizer/XP1000

Energizer seem to have a range of products: http://www.portablepower.co.za/energizer

Does anyone have experience with these or other recommendations?

Yeah, bought mine at Makro. Works great, just don't be fooled into thinking you can use it to charge more than once or whatever, it charges my Iphone about 60%. It really only is for an emergency.

I have the XP4000 bought from Portable Power - I'd recommend it. It's about a 40% charge on a Galaxy Tablet but will charge up a phone and another device or 2 fully (MiFi, iPod etc). It's pretty small. You could also look at a PowerChimp but really if you're travelling, the XP4000 or similar are really not that big in a laptop type bag or even handbag / backpack. I'd also look at a spare battery for the phone (I have all of these, spare battery, XP4000, PowerChimp.. I just got sick and tired of running out of power!)

Saw some solar powered chargers on Bid or Buy. Friend has one and says it is ok

How about a CM Choiix Power Fort..?

Updated info here. Also: maybe consider solar options

XP2000 is great, recharges my LG P970 from flat to full with even a little spare. XP2000 has 500mAh more than the phone, so a good combo. I like that it recharges via USB too.

I bought one of these at a China sourcing event: http://www.maxpowerhk.com/pro/Info_6_77.html 5200mAh @ R250 pretty chuffed with the purchase.

It's hard to find these types of devices locally.

I had my eye on the 15,600mAh HyperJuice Plug but I can't find a local supplier.

It can deliver 3A at 5V (15W) so it can comfortably charge two devices at once.

A bit pricey but you get what you pay for. Gizmodo review is very favourable.

Looks like a beast, wonder how many recharge cycles it has.
