Hi Guys,

A guy I know has currently started setting up a new NNTP server and is looking for people to trial and test the system. Currently the server is hosted overseas but if there is enough interest, then it will be brought in SA.

He is only looking for people who will regularly use the service and willing to continue for the whole duration of the trial which will be about 4 months.

If you are interested in the trial you can PM me your email address and i'll forward onto him so he can send connection details.

And for those doubtful few, this is legit :)

EDIT: Will be only accepting between 10-20 guys for the trial

EDIT: Also would like some heavy downloaders and also guys with fast lines, maybe even 10mb

Cheers,

Those who do use it, it would be appreciated to post as much feedback as you can like line speed, ISP and average speeds. Also any other feedback or comments are welcomed.

Thanks guys

I'm pretty happy with my current nntp provider, and its already paid for so will rather not waste your friends time. Hope this works out, would be great having a local option.

Signed up,got deets, queued 6gig and turned off my other providers

Currently getting 270-310KB/s on my Afrihost uncapped

Getting full speed on Mweb, I asked him the number of days retention, will report back as soon as I hear back.

Hi,

We don't work with retention. We use an intelligent algorithm for content expiration. An article which was accessed the longest time ago, will be deleted first only if, and when, the server requires disk space.

It's similar to the algorithms used by HTTP Proxy Servers for content expiration. We effectively took LFUDA (Least Frequently Used with Dynamic Aging) from Squid and implemented it on NNTP.

Glad you guys are getting decent speeds. We already picked up a few minor issues we will be addressing in the software.

You all should have a PM. Sorry, with the lack of an automated web site which still needs to be done, it's still a bit of a manual process :) All in due time.

IT WORKS !

:P
Tx.. will keep you updated on the speed etc.. good idea btw..

Testing it now, seems to work pretty decent.

Testing on a nzb that is 1025 days old! seems to get decent speed.

Most of the rest of my downloads will be new TV shows as they are released via sickbeard, but if you want to download old stuff, seems that will work just fine.

Hi All,

We've hit 12 users now, and with 12 users connected at the same time, we will now start to run into contention (we've got a limited amount of sessions from our upstream feeds for testing).

For now, I will not be adding any more users until at least Sunday or Monday in order for us to have some time to gauge the impact and performance. The server is not pushing as much traffic as I have hoped for (yet), but it is behaving MUCH better than anticipated (which is a good sign).

Should you be interested in testing, please DO let me or acidrain know. We can still add the accounts and just not activate them. Access will be enabled on a first come, first served basis.

I will also in due course contact all members who has been given access and ask for your email address. This is purely used for communication purposes related to the trail. As things move to a end, I will ask that you all complete a survey or two and provide some feedback. I'm really excited about the prospects at this point in time.

Sorry guys, been stuck up at work. Will check with savage and attend to those who have not yet been served.
