Hello Everyone.

I decided to go out and buy a Linksys router.

This one to be exact: http://homestore.cisco.eu/store/ciscoeu/en_IE/pd/productID.241269600

Now the day i plug this thing in it works very well. No problems at all. The line connects at 4meg, download speeds are good.

The next day the connection starts dropping every 30min.

I did the usual phone telkom and B**** and moan.
They agree that there is a problem and they will reset the port.

Port is reset, ADSL is fine for about a day.
The next day the same thing - connection drops every 30min.
I found it kind of strange that this was happening after I put in the new router so I called Axxess and they walked me through the ADSL settings (everything was correct)

I call telkom again and ask them to change the port. They agree to do so and the line is good for a day again and then the same thing happens.

I decide I have had enough of this and plug my old router back in.
Line is 100% again.

So by now it seems like the router is faulty.

I thought I'd ask for some opinions here before I do that though.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks

I did do the timings one day. Its not exactly 30min but more +-

Sometimes once its drops it wont reconnect by itself for 10min - 2 hours.
As soon as i reboot the router it connects again.

Please post your line stats as well, as some modems work better than others with poor line quality.

And what is the make and model of your old modem?

Also, try upgrading the firmware on your router, if there is new firmware available.

I personally prefer and recommend Netgear modems to all my friends and colleagues. They work well with poor line stats, and hardly ever have issues. They just keep going and going and going. On the downside though, Netgear routers are not as customizable, and have fewer features than other modems. This shouldn't be a problem unless you are a power user and like tinkering.

Had EXACTLY the same issue with that modem. Swopped the router out 3 times. Ended up selling the last one to a friend who has zero issues with it.

Might be an exchange issue or something but telkom refused to do anything about it so it was easier just to stick to a router that didnt give any issues. Both an old netgear and old billion modem didnt give any issues.
I'm on the Heuweloord Exchange in Centurion.

Also regarding the X3000 - my personal experience is not so good even disregarding the above issue. Made many changes to it config wise and after a while the modem just becomes unresponsive. Even a factory reset didnt work (this happened to 2 of the modems). This isnt even unusual changes - just normal config changes via the web UI.
Also there is no way to check line SNR/Atten which is a nightmare. Wireless range also seemed poor.

Hmmm, seeing BrandOfRiva's post below I suggest you try and get credit and get a different one. Otherwise swap it out and hope you don't have the same problem with the new one.

I have a feeling that the X3000 is a bit sensitive.

Thanks for all the responces.

Your ADSL stats seems perfect, so I can't think of a reason why it would disconnect.

I see that you're connected at 4Mbps, but your router states that you'll easily be able to achieve 10Mbps.

This topic is just another prime example of why I always suggest the D-Link DSL-2500U in combination with a gigabit router (that has no ADSL modem), because the expensive gigabit routers doesn't always include decent ADSL modem chipsets.

My router is a the default billion 500 that comes with telkom adsl line, it works great but drops my wifi connections after it's been on for a few hours (12-18hours) and then I have to restart the router.
Bloody annoying.

That's another argument all together.
Called telkom and told them i want to upgrade to 10meg. They said, "your exchange doesnt support those speeds"

I told them my router says they are lying. They said they cant help me.

But yes im going to go ask for a refund for that router seems as though they put a good brand name on a turd.

Thanks for the help guys.

Oddly enough, I've recently got a Cisco/Linksys WAG320N for a client - it seems as though after +/- 10 mins, all throughput from the LAN ports die. ie all APs/computers that are connected to it via LAN cables suddenly stop working and display private IPs (169.x.x.x)

Not sure if this is similar to your problem or if it's actually your line that drops? Just thought I'd mention it.

No, thats the one thing i cannot moan about on this thing.
The switch part is very good.

Just the adsl modem chip thats pretty crappy

Yep - Goog seems to indicate that Cisco's consumer grade equipment is, well, pretty carp

Its a real pitty, because I love Cisco routers and switches, we have quite a few here at my work place.
They do the job and they do it well.

Just wish they put the same effort into the consumer stuff.

Stinksys.

Says it all.

:p

It's a case of a lucky packet. Sell it, get another brand of router, and try again.

I use to get disconnect randomly on my WAG320N due to router it hot.

So I used a 120mm fan to cool it down, you can give it a try. :)

The famous saying of "They don't make it like they used to" applies or like The_Librarian says, lucky packet. I still have a Linksys WAG200, over 4 years old, with absolutely no problems over the 4 years. No disconnections, no resets, with sometimes 4-6 wifi devices connecting. I have yet to factory reset this thing.

Since discovering the TP-Link stuff I don't think I'll buy any other type of ADSL/Modem/Router for home use again. Have been through all the other 'consumer' grade stuff over the years (Netgear, D-Link, etc) and the TP-Link stuff performs as well (if not better) at a third of the price.

Had never heard of this brand till now, do the local suppliers here supply the stuff? I can get from various suppliers.
