Samsung Galaxy S4 Will Be Unveiled In February At MWC 2013, Launching Globally In March [Rumor]

As we approach the end of the year, Android fanboys and girls are anxiously awaiting even the smallest bit of news, leaks or rumors on the next iteration of Google’s Nexus phone. Well, tonight’s juicy rumor leap frogs over this year’s Nexus, and lands all the way onto next year’s Samsung Galaxy S4. Yes, you read that right — FOUR.

The folks at The Korea Times have found themselves with juicy bit of insider news they’re calling an exclusive. Apparently, company officials and local parts suppliers have confirmed that Samsung is gearing up to announce the Galaxy S4 in February at next year’s Mobile World Congress, with a global launch taking place no later than March (GS3 was announced early May and launched a few days shy of June). The Samsung official supplying the intel said the S4 would be more than capable of drawing the limelight away from Apple’s iPhone 5 (which I’m sure was the motivating factor this info was leaked just 3 days after its unveiling).

There’s only one thought running through my head: how they hell are they going to top the S3? The Samsung executive said the S4 would “definitely use” LTE along with Sammy’s in-house quad-core Exynos. I’m assuming that means this time around, there wont be a need to use Qualcomm’s chips for LTE compatibility in some countries like the US, with Samsung’s chips taking its place. The executive went on to say:

“Samsung is asking Apple to pay more to use its mobile application processors produced at its plant in Austin, Texas. The release of the S4 means more market share for Samsung as it is the only firm that can guarantee on-time delivery, output commitment and better pricing for mobile application processors.”

More specs for the upcoming S4 include a 5-inch OLED display (a .2-inch increase from the current GS3), which may or may not feature Samsung’s flexible display technology, apparently due to production problems. When it comes to design, a Samsung partner said to expect the same rectangle shape with extremely rounded corners, but this time around, Samsung is currently in talks to offer modified designs to specific US carriers similar to the launch of the Galaxy S2.

Exciting news, right? Of course, take all of this with a grain of salt. As quickly Android moves, it’s nice to keep looking forward but we’re still pretty far off from an S4 launch. My main request? Not an increase in memory but faster memory to go along with an ample 2GB of RAM. Okay, now take a minute to fantasize over the GS4 — now tell me. What’s the one feature you would hope for most in the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S4?

I like the look of that mockup. Would be nice to see a return to elegant design for Samsung.


SGS3 was only just released 4 days ago in the UK and no more than 3 months ago anywhere. They're seriously going to bring out the S4 in March already?

Rumors: Galaxy S IV to have 13MP camera, quad-core A15 CPU

The Samsung Galaxy S IV rumors are heating up - the 4.99" 1080p Super AMOLED screen was brought up again as was the Exynos 5450 chipset rumors (with quad-core Cortex-A15 CPU). The camera has also caught the attention of the rumor mill and apparently it will be a 13MP shooter.

That sounds plausible - we've heard that the Galaxy Note II was supposed to have a 13MP shooter, but in the end Samsung went with the old 8MP because Sony couldn’t make enough sensors (and it had already made a deal with LG for the Optimus G). Plus, Samsung can't have three consecutive generations of Galaxy S phones using the same camera, can it?

A new Korean source talked about the new 4.99" 1080p Super AMOLED screens that Samsung is supposed to show off at CES in January (and that are already in production). The same rumor coming from a second source seemingly confirms it, but unfortunately this new rumor is still light on details.

Since the "Plus" keyword is missing from the "Super AMOLED" name, it suggests that we're talking about a PenTile display. It probably won't make a big difference at 441ppi pixel density, though.

Anyway, the other rumor that was reiterated was about the Exynos 5450 chipset - the quad-core version of the 5250 chipset that powers the Nexus 10 tablet. We're still very skeptical of that - four Cortex-A15 cores at 2GHz will make minced meat of current mobile chipsets, but will probably also suck a battery dry in record time.

Well, we look forward to CES to see if Samsung really will break out the 1080p Super AMOLED displays, but we guess it won't be before Q2 that we see the Galaxy S IV for real.

Per rumours the iPhone 5S is also undergoing manufacturing testing at Foxconn so Apple is also planning to release the next iPhone iteration sooner than expected it seems.

Apple's in the interesting position of playing catch up to Samsung. The iPhone 5 was a bit like win8, a letdown.
 
Samsung to show an 8-core big.LITTLE chipset next year

Samsung is rumored to put a quad Cortex-A15 CPU inside the Galaxy S IV with the Exynos 5450 chipset, but EETimes is reporting that the Korean company has a more interesting chipset in the works - the first one to use ARM's big.LITTLE technology.

This tech pairs a number of powerful Cortex-A15 cores with the same number of low-power Cortex-A7 cores (similar to NVIDIA's fifth core in Tegra 3). The chipset seamlessly switches between the high and low power cores depending on the load (but it can't run all at the same time).

The chipset in particular will pack four A15s clocked at 1.8GHz and four A7s clocked at 1.2GHz. The A7s will reportedly match a quad-core Cortex-A8 CPU (not that such exist), while the four A15s should offer a big increase over the already powerful A15 duo that powers the Nexus 10. The chip will be built on a 28nm process and pack 2MB of cache.

We're sure that there will be plenty of rumors that this will be the chipset in the Galaxy S IV, but it's more likely to see it in a tablet first.

Samsung Galaxy S IV rumored to launch on March 15

Samsung's next generation Galaxy S flagship smartphone will be launched on March 15, according to a "trusted" insider, who has confirmed the arrival to SamMobile. Earlier, an internal raffle doc leak at a New Zealand retailer had suggested that the device might be available from April, but we can now expect the smartphone to hit the stores from the beginning of April.

We already know Samsung's Unpacked event won't happen at the MWC, but the company is expected to send the invites after the conclusion of the industry's largest event.

Samsung's 2013 flagship smartphone is rumored to sport a Super AMOLED display of FullHD resolution and a whopping 8-core Exynos 5 Octa processor, 8-core Mali-T658 GPUand 2 GB of RAM. A 13-megapixel rear camera with the ability to shoot 1080p full HD videos at 30 fps will be mounted at the back, while 2-megapixel front camera will take care of video-calls. The next Samsung flagship will reportedly be powered by Android 4.2.1 Jelly Bean.

If the rumors are to be trusted, the smartphone will be available in Europe first, with the whole Asian market is excited to follow by the end of April. Galaxy IV will make it to the shores of America, Australia and Africa by the end of Q2.

Beginning of April would be realistic, it's about a year since the S3 was released. I'm very curious to see how BIG.little octocores play out in real life performance. It's going to be a pretty sweet phone for sure; only please may they fix the colour accuracy, it's such an ongoing issue with Galaxy phones.
 
Why would they move the back button to the left when the other Samsungs are on the right?
I'm going to call this image a fake because of that.

I think we're all hoping this one will be it. But there's still an open question as to whether 1080p is even needed or it's overkill for a 5' screen, considering the resources it demands for negligible improvements. I haven't seen one of these fHD phones in person to comment really. The HTC one got heavily criticized for the performance and battery hit that it took. We're not yet quite at the inflection point where we can be excessive with smartphone hardware.

Which is why i'm doubting these 1080P rumours. It just doesn't seem like the tech is there yet. If the phone has rubbish battery life all the galaxy hype built over the last few years will be lost.

The galaxy line is an enormous cash cow for Samsung.
