Hello All.

As you all know, Apple touted its new Passbook app at its keynote and launch of the iPhone 5 and iOS 6.

Having watched the videos and stuff it looks pretty cool and convenient - there is just one problem.

How do I take advantage of this in SA? AFAIK there is not a single service that has integrated - or even tried to integrate - with passbook. It's slightly irritating to say the least - here is this incredibly convenient feature for End-users - and we don't have a single contender to offer up their services and actually look the part.

if you know of any services that have done so, let me know. in the next few days I'm going to be e-mailing multiple ticket-based outlets - Nu Metro, SK, CompuTicket - enquiring about their plans to integrate with this service - if any. It will form sort of a research project of sorts. I might also ask Uncle Jan and the rest of the MyBB journalism team to investigate if possible, considering that they have far greater experience in this field.

Again, any information you can give me would be a massive help. I will also report back in the coming days if interest is high enough.

Stay awesome.

Asking out of complete ignorance but... does Apple even allow South Africans to use this feature? If so please direct your pitchforks and torches at Apple

The ideal thing would have been if Computicket could run through this, but they still struggle to get web sales of tickets right which other companies could do probably before cellphones even existed.

If you go into Passbook on an SA Aoole account they list exactly one compatible app - Lutfhansa.

I'd like to see what the SA Airport Company makes of me waving an iPhone at them at the boarding gate ... No I'd prefer to see what the SA Airport Company makes of YOU waving an iPhone at them at the boarding gate!

Sooner or later some hapless tourist is going to try it.

As far as I can see, Lufthansa and booking.com are the only apps currently supporting Passbook in South Africa. But I think one should not underestimate the ignorance of SA companies. Also, they probably couldn't care less. I realise that software development is expensive, but for companies like NuMetro, SK etc. getting their existing apps to integrate with Passbook is hardly rocket science. But in SA, companies don't generally care about what customers WANT - although probably the same situation across the world.

I also contacted SK about it, and I did not even get a reply.

Still, I sure as hell is going to TRY and use this functionality with the Lufthansa app when I leave on holiday in a couple of weeks!

imagine the day when you can use passbook with an SA Taxi :D

PASSBOOK...
Sounds like the apartheid time book that blacks had to carry around or they were loaded in police vans and spent the night in jail.
I'm sure the ANC won't allow this in SA

South Africa is a technology backwater so don't expect much traction on these type of features anytime soon.

I use the kulula mobile boarding pass all the time (twice a week). You wave your phone under the bardcode readers and off you go. Works like a charm, and all the airport staff are completely familiar with the process.

I've recently had a use for it, albeit not for use in SA.
I booked 3 places on AirBnB (who have a very cool app), and you can import your bookings into Passbook.

As I said, I'm not staying in SA, but you can book SA places on AirBnB, so that's the only potential use I can think of in South Africa.

Sorry for the necro.
But just saw on fb that a friend used it with ster kinekor.
More than a year later from the OP!

We used it a few months ago on SAA. Worked like a charm.

Also used it with SAA - worked perfectly and very conveniently!

Heard Ster Kinekor are starting to use it too now..

Anyone have any other companies that they know of in SA that uses passbook?

From this thread I'm seeing:

SAA
Ster Kinekor
Kulula.com (possibly)

Anything else?

Would be nice to finally cut up all those store card and use either one card or this passbook feature.

Discovery Health now supports Passbook :) Go ahead and add your membership cards via the Discovery app!

Noticed it this morning as well. If you are a techie with Discovery, a suggestions would be to have a better message in the app about the photo/picture - I doubt that many people have HealthID configured and an image uploaded. Was confusing for me initially.

What is the benefit of using it with Discovery? Apologies for the silly question - get how you could buy tickets with SAA/Kulula/Ster Kinekor - but what are you "buying" with Discovery Health? Or am I being thick, and this is in reference to the Disco CC?
