I thought I would post up an information/semi tutorial due to the amount of people that are not prepared to pay over 600 a month for Cable/satellite or 80 to hire a DVD yet have a broadband connection.

What is Netflix ? Wikipedia is probably worth a read as because we are in South Africa, if you go to the Netflix website you will get a no access message. Due to copyright/licencing agreements, Netflix is not avilable in South Africa. But there are ways around this.

First and foremost, Netflix needs to think you are in the US. To get around that part, we will need to use either a proxy or a VPN. Not technically proficient and it sounds too hard ? Its not, its pretty simple so read on.

For example, UnoTelly works well and offers a 1 week free trial. They have tutorials on their website for almost every device and all their service involves is using their DNS servers to stooge Netflix in to thinking you are in the US.

If you wish to use the service on your PC, simply follow the tutorial on their site for doing just that (after you have signed up for the free trial). Once you have done that, and checked that you are using their services via the box at the top of the page (right hand side), its time to head off to Netflix ( )

If you have done all the above, you will see the full Netflix site and you can then sign up for a free 1 month trial. To do this you will need a valid credit card. If you dont cancel the trial within 1 month, you will be billed the subscription price of $7.99 a month for unlimited access.

Simply sign up as normal, but you will need to put in a US postcode ( I used 11206 ; it is a zip code I found using Google Map from New York ). After signing up, you can now watch anything you like on the Netflix site.

Watching TV on a computer is not my thing, some people can do it but I am not one of them. I have a 60 inch TV and thats where I want to watch TV.

I purchased a Western Digital TV Live streaming receiver from a local shop for about 1100. When I got home I plugged it in and there wasnt anything exciting, just youtube and facebook crap . I then added UnoTelly's DNS addresses to my modems setting for my internet connection and rebooted the WD. (or you can do this for the device only in its settings)

On reboot it wanted to do a firmware upgrade which I allowed (you can also select it from the menu) and after completion of this process and auto reboots, a number of new services including Netflix were available. All thats then required is to select Netflix and follow the prompts for your account and password that you signed up to the trial with.

It is also worth nothing that it is NOT illegal for South African to access US based services. It is however a breach of the providers terms of use and at worst all they could do is cancel your account. You will need a broadband service to stream from Netflix, I am on a 8MB ADSL connection that connects at about 6MB and I have no problems accessing HD content.
Your Netflicks account has options for 3 different video quality settings, from 300 meg an hour, 700 meg an hour or 1 gig an hour.

* All information posted is something I have actually done myself otherwise I wouldnt post it. WD receiver and UnoTelly are not the only services that work, but they are ones I have actually tested and represent good value for money.

Receiver : $129 USD ~1100 ZAR
UnoTelly $4.95 a month ~ 42
Netflix $7.99 a month ~ 70

Ongoing 120 ZAR a month for unlimited TV (plus your ISP costs)

Thanks for this informative post, I want to try this with my new Smart TV and also using Netflix and Hulu on the PS3

@Aquadyne

Glad you liked my post. The funny thing about Netflix is that the quality on PS3 is much higher than on PC. This is especially apparent on 720P/1080P. I think it has to do with the decoder on PS3. Let me know if you see the same difference.

Rooted AppleTV + UnoTelly DNS and shazambo... Netflix.. Hulu... for cheaper than a DSTV remote.

EDIT : and of course 10meg uncapped for ONLY half the monthly GDP of a small Siberian village.

I cannot use my mastercard of visa card for signup to Netflix.
Mastercard says "There appears to be a problem with your card".
Visa says "The security code appears to be invalid".

Both of these cards are active and I use them often. Is there a specific type of card Netflix accepts?

I entered the US Postal code specified by OP.

UnoTelly is active and working.

EDIT: Got it working. Wifey's Standard Bank CC saved the day.

EDIT2: All sorted. Playing around with Netflix in Plex. This rocks.

Thanks OP ;)

Just finished signing up and trying the Netflix service through my PS3.
Flawless and minimum effort.
Thanks again..

Also struggling with VISA credit cards that ain't working. Browsing through my available credit cards now to see what I can get to work.

Just a quick question (probably quite dumb), but if I change my Preferred DNS settings for my internet connection in order to "pretend" to be from the US (UnoTelly), what effect will that have on my normal internet?

It has been a while since I signed up but I think you just have to be persistent.First attempt at putting in credit card details it will block you but after 2nd or 3rd attempt it seems to accept.
Should have no affect on your Internet experience.
A great alternative to unotelly is unblock-us - get full HD.

Any suggestions for a video streaming site?

Netflix is a bit limited. No Fringe, Hawaii Five-O, Dexter, etc.
Hulu seems to redirect to ShowTime, CBS, etc. (not sure if I can watch from those sites with a Hulu subscription)... however, it seems like with Hawaii Five-O for instance, I can only watch the new season 3 and not the rest of season 2 (from episode 11 and up).

I have setup Unblock-US and the quality is still questionable.
I have set Netflix preference to highest but no change.

It is not bad. But certainly no-where near HD. Watching on my secondary 32" Sammy which is full HD so the lower quality stands out quite a bit.
How do I go about improving the quality of the stream?

Managed to get Netflix working last night thanks to the OP. I also found that at first Netflix wouldnt accept my CC (Standard Bank) but after a few tries it suddenly worked.

I used unotelly and put the dns for Capetown (primary) and Germany (secondary) into my router. Did not change the dns setting on the PC, XBox or iPad. On the XBox I changed locale under system settings to USA and was then able to install Netflix on the XBox and view. Quality is not good though, I did change the settings in Netflix to 'best' but has not helped yet. Not sure if my 4Mb line is too slow for higher quality streaming.

Next step is to try Hulu+ and see if its better than Netflix.

Mike, I searched the net a bit last night and it seems that Netflix still does its own determination on what quality it will stream to you no matter what you set in the account settings. Some people claim that after watching for a period it improves as Netflix is able to get a bit of history on your connection.

Stupid question but I assume you selected an HD title to watch? There are no magical tweaks, just a matter of plugging DNS settings in router and you are good to go.Obviously HD is very much dependent on speed of your line so if there is any slowdown on the ISP network you will see it in the picture.
Give it another go in evening when network is less congested and see if there is a change.
One thing I have discovered is that it is best to do Netflix streaming on a capped account where you can get full line speed or an uncapped account where streaming is prioritised.Obviously having a line that does >4MB helps

I have a 6mbps with an Axxess 10mbps uncapped package. I pretty much get full line speed all day (Axxess rock with this).

I am still getting a feel for Netflix so I more than likely selected a kak quality movie. I assumed setting my preferences to highest would make Netflix deliver the HD versions of their content.

Thanks for the info. Will go fiddle a bit more now.

When you select the program you are about to play it will give you some info about it and will specify if it is HD or not.A lot of the content is only SD.
On another topic have you tried streaming to your smartphone/Tablet?
There is an app for that but all content will be SD.

I pay $9 for a put.io account. I have a paid for Hulu account and a paid for Netflix account (but I got over using proxies to view them, and also didnt like how late the show played). Ever since I got a put.io account I have not used Hulu or Netflix :D

I  the xbmc plugin.
