Windows 8 Pro upgrade clean install and 32-bit to 64-bit

The other thread contains a lot of useful info but just want to post this seperately so it's clearly visible.

  1. Clean install. Now widely know, but when you boot from the installation media, select advanced option and format the target partition and install. The first installation I did was already activated by the time the installation finished. PS It is possible that your activation might fail if you purchased the Windows Upgrade Offer for recent purchases and your upgrade device does not qualify.
  2. 32-bit to 64-bit. There is a link in your confirmation email that downloads Windows8-Setup.exe. Please note that this is not the same as the upgrade assistant. Run this file on a 64-bit OS, any device will do since it will not do the verification process again. Choose your installation media and enjoy with a cup of coffee ;)

    Interesting point: I used the same key to install the 64-bit upgrade, just to test what happens. I did the installation offline and then verified that the key was not saved. The usual message, as it was in Windows 7, displays in the Action Center that gives you a opportunity to enter a valid key and activate. I read in numerous blogs that Windows 8 does not have a grace period, BUT I rebooted several times and did not get any hourly shut-downs or a black desktop background. Even the well know slmgr /rearm command works in order to extend evalution copies, don't know what the consequences is though. Will install in a VM and see what happens.
 
I just did the purchase and all from a 32bit system and made a ISO after, i found out you need to-do a ISO on a 64bit system if you want a 64bit ISO installation, now i don't have any 64bit computers from work, will i just use the setup file in the link i got from purchasing and use it on my 64bit system with my Serial Code i got for the 64bit installation?
 
can you do a clean install without formatting?

what I mean is, it will remove c:\program files, and c:\program files (x86), remove c:\windows, but backup c:\users

it is a real lus for me to backup my notebook data, but I dont want to install over my current windows 7, which has been up for like 2 years, and is quite cluttered, and would prefer to start the os fresh

That's right, just run the Windows8-Setup.exe on the 64-bit OS, enter your key and it will download the 64-bit installation.

Why not simply download a 65-bit ISO?

Afaik there are four ways to get the 64-bit media:

  1. Download on a 64-bit Windows OS
  2. Purchase the boxed upgrade in a shop, that has both DVD's included
  3. Select the option to purchase backup disks, should also have both disks.
  4. Ask a friend for a copy ;0)
