I've got a lobotomised laptop here that's lost its mind due to its CMOS battery going flat, a CR2016 coin cell. Which you would think is easy to find and, usually, you'd be right. Only, I've got a wee wrinkle here - THIS wee bastard has leads:

Which prompted me to look for said coin cell with solder tabs and that's where I come unstuck for it's piss easy to find a naked battery but getting one with tabs is like finding rocking horse poo so, can anyone point me in the right direction?

Oh and the usual suspects: Communica, RS and Mantech all have naked ones so they're no good, and SPL according to the (HA!) 'search' function on their site neither carry the battery as a single item nor, it seems, the HP part that includes the battery with a bunch of pointless plastic in which I'm not remotely interested. And Mouser won't ship their tabbed ones here.

I'm pretty sure that the Battery Guys in edenvale could make one up for you easy..

Maybe you can squeeze in a BH-800 socket and attach leads to that ...

Much as I'd love to, I've already ixnayed that approach on account of there being a pesky housing in the way already. Also, as this is a job (and not a personal project), up to a rational point I'd prefer to do it right but, failing that may well have to go the stick-it route.

This company could also help with tagging strip and soldering advice

You could probably just use any normal epoxy provided that you leave the area in contact free of adhesive.
Shot, will also be calling them tomorrow.

From what I remember you just need the correct flux and a soldering iron with enough power to heat the area quickly without damaging the chemicals inside. An adhesive like Q-Bond (~R15 small tube from Mica) would make a stronger bond than solder - if you use the aluminium/metal powder option it may even be conductive. A springy tagging strip with some small raised punched holes to make contact against the battery could be securely attached to the coin body in two places with Epoxy/Superglue. Many of the compound batteries used in car remote controls are actually held together using heat shrink tubing.

You could get mouser to ship to postbox courier or myus.

Sand or place a bit of phosphoric acid on the spot you want to solder. Use lead free solder and tin the area quickly with a soldering iron at HIGH heat so you can do it QUICKLY. Next tin the wire ends and quickly solder to the cell. You can use a bit of resin/epoxy/qbond over the area and wires.

Oh there are always risks involved when soldering to batteries so maybe were safety goggles. You don't want to apply heat for too long, that why you use a really hot iron to do the job quicker.

Else get hold of Graham at Akita (link posted earlier) and he should be able to sort you out ;)

Well what a decent oke Graham is...! :D Thank you (respectively) for the info/mention, I'm seeing him on Monday ..and it's going to cost me more in time/travel to get there than it will for the battery - made up for me, that is - itself.

So, we'll see anon.
