Man sues Microsoft over Surface storage capacity

Microsoft has posted a FAQ about Surface RT storage, and it reveals that out of the 32GB built into the tablet, only half of that amount is free for users to access. The total disk size thanks to the Windows binary systems is 29GB, and then Windows RT, the Microsoft Office apps, and other built-in apps total an additional 8GB. Throw in another 5GB for Windows recovery tools, and you're left with 16GB of free space right out of the box.

Eish, so it's essentially a 16GB, that's crazy.

He's got a point I think, I would be forgiving if it was even a couple of gigs but half the device? And that's with no additional apps etc installed. They should either add another memory module or advertise it as a 16GB/48GB.

I totally agree, 16GB for the OS and required software is way too much.

Seriously?

Typical bloody yank lawyer...

seriously? typical bloody south african used to being ripped off.

half the hard drive is gone before the user even get's his hands on it. if they are advertising 32gb hard drive you expect to have nearly that much space avaiable for storage, not less than half.

Actually, no....

But I do my research before I buy things, plus I don't think a Class-Action lawsuit is the correct method of dealing with this issue. All it will do is make a lawyer money, nothing else.

It is false advertising imo.

The Surface RT tablet comes in two sizes – 32GB and 64GB. As with most devices today, the operating system takes up a portion of this internal storage, leaving slightly less user-available capacity.

Granted and most folk will know this up front but there is a huge difference between 32GB and 16GB.

Its false advertising get over it. Not everyone buying a surface is tech savvy.

If Android took half my bloody TF101 I also would be ticked off.

Besides WTF is Windows RT doing with the 16 gig, its not like its a fullblow OS like Windows Pro?

Also Libre Office = 400 MB/Quick Office for iOS/Android is 20 MB Android OS = 400MB/iOS = 700MB

Maybe Microsoft should trim their code for a change, or are they still using the legacy left by old IBM coders (Pay salary by lines of code instead of by function) They even developed a tool to help http://archive.msdn.microsoft.com/LOCCounter

Are you going to sue every computer manufacturer for selling Laptops and Computers with 500GB HDD's when you could only use 450GB of the space because of the OS?

When it's only 10% it's acceptable, but when it's 50%. Not cool.

I agree that its not really great on their part at all.

But I just get irritated with this instant "Lets sue and sue some more" attitude the yanks have.
