SA losing R5 billion a year to cable theft

We have been talking about this for close on 15 years. Yet every year we are told more and more cable is being stolen. Maybe the SAPS are not hitting the correct targets. Instead of the polacks who shimmy up a pole and cut the wire down, why not rather target the collection points and distributors? This has been used very successfully in the UK and France. Why does SA have to be so far behind in dealing with copper criminals? Pay a visit to Scotland Yard or the Sûreté and find out how they manage their cable theft. If the Sûreté can reduce the cable and transformers stolen from the Paris Metro from 800 tonnes a year to under 55, then maybe they are doing their job correctly.

I think a few people need to read the article and not just the heading...

We just had R480k worth damaged 2 nights ago, a day without power & now being asked to save where we can until they are properly replaced
