Telkom’s new chairman: Mr Fix-It

Talk is cheap .
We will see if he can fix it or even identify the problems.

The government is not just a monkey on Telkom's back... they are the 20 ton Brachiosaur.

Wow, a man with brains! Miracles! The end of the world might indeed be close.

He utters the right words.

It must be tough to come into a company which is already so badly perceived. He has a huge task ahead.
And it is not easy to change the mistakes of the past. These types of things takes time. And the public (we) want things to be changed immediately. It simply can never happen that way.

I see that he has three huge challenges
1) He would have to stand up against political interference, which would be a job-killer.
2) He needs to motivate his staff - which is a long term project. De-motivated staff will sink any company. And he didn't employ the current staff.
3) He needs to get the public to start trusting Telkom again, and trust is earned, not given. But we, as the public, need to give him time to implement his new policies.

We should not be naive. Things simply cannot change overnight. He will need a fairly substantial time (I don't know how long is long enough) to fix things.

From what I read in the article, he seems a bright individual with the right mind-set to try to save Telkom.
But he will not be able to do it on his own. If he doesn't receive the support from his board, from shareholders, from employees and also from customers, then he will be doomed.

He seems to be the best candidate so far for the job. I hope he can make a difference. If he fails, then I fear there is no hope for Telkom.

I'll agree with you CommonSense - we need to give people a chance, and it would be nice to see someone at Telkom having the balls to do what is right for Telkom, and not what is right for the government.

I was willing to give Zuma a chance when he became el presidente, against all my better judgement, and look how that turned out!

Another feeding through for the pigs!

All the people on the board merely play the musical chairs of moving from boardroom to boardroom without knowing anything or doing anything. Leslie Maasdorp epitomises this grand South African tradition. A light resume with no real accomplishments.

Telkom's only hope now is to cannibalise itself; 8ta will soon provide all the growth in profits! It is otherwise on a steady glide path to irrelevance.

Jabu Mabuza strikes a calm, dignified presence. His sartorial style –colour-matched shirt and handkerchief and trendy hat – doesn’t hurt. There’s a touch of confident swagger, but no arrogance.

“The day shareholders give you a strategy, they may as well come run the business.”
Reeks of arrogance to me. He just said don't come with your ideas, we will decide on the way forward...

Telkom’s fourth chairperson since 2009 knows the enormity of the task ahead of him. He speaks of the “testicular fortitude” needed to do the job, and he’s heard it all from friends and colleagues.

Testicular fortitude? Needed to do the job? So he is a sexist as well. Excellent!

Wow, so another epic failure appointment at Telkom.

He need to do something significant and very fast to convince me. I'll give him till end Jan 2013 and I bet that nothing will happen. The festive season is no excuse, the ship is sinking and we need action very quick.
I personally does not like his arrogance, but maybe it will work for him.

Time will tell.

Now stop talking and start acting.

So we the public should give the call center/ the technicians/the finance department another chance ? No, they had their chance and they failed miserably, just because the CEO changed does not mean the whole company now needs another chance. Telkom had theirs and they blew it.

He understands the need to have the confidence of investors better than most. And Mabuza is very experienced in balancing and pleasing tricky shareholders.

Yeah who is the biggest investor, goverment... The consumer is once again going to cry.

I don't want to live in your world or where you make the rules, for there I would probably have been shot for failing at some tasks.
:p

I prefer my world where people are given second chances. I make mistakes too, and am forgiven for them time and again. This person has taken on a huge task. It will not be easy to change a company as huge as Telkom in a month or two. LOL at people who wants to give him untill January to change things. Seriously! Reality check please.

Maybe the personnel didn't give the previous CEOs their full support because they also live in our country and saw that their boss was not the right choice.

Time will tell.
On the available facts so far, I am hopeful.
