Mecer distributes Clevo laptops in SA.
I can go the Clevo route and get awesome specs, or go the brandname route and get reliability with, say, Dell.

Anyone here that went the Clevo route and can share some insight?

Clevo make absolutely excellent laptops if you go for the right models. Praeses has owned one for a few years, so maybe pm him and ask what he thinks about it still.

Thanks for your response!
At the moment I'm torn between the Clevo W370ET and the Lenovo Y580.
They have more-or-less the same spec, but the one is 15" and the other 17".

I prefer 17" but the 15" is LED whilst the 17" is only LCD.
Battery life on the Lenovo is also way better (more than double), I read somewhere that Clevo uses Desktop CPU's, which use way more power, can this be true?

I have the Mecer Xpression W860C and its awesome had it for about a year and a half replaced my PC with it and i have no regrets .

Clevo is an OEM - they make laptops for other manufacturers. Also, LED in this case IS LCD that is just LED-backlit. A true (O)LED laptop screen will multiply the laptop's price several times at current prices.

As for CPUs - as per their spec on that machine, all CPUs available for it are mobile units.

Personally, I like Lenovo. My main personal laptop and my work laptop are both Lenovo units, one being midrange and the other more highend. Build quality on my work machine, which is a Thinkpad, is excellent. My personal machine's, an Ideapad, isn't bad but I'd call it average and what you would expect from a major manufacturer. The Thinkpad also gets 6 hours or so battery life, has a FHD screen at 15" and has a few other nice to haves. You pay more for Thinkpads but you get what you pay for.

With that being said, Clevo has a pretty solid reputation. They make good value-for-money machines and if you get the right model at the right price, you can't really go wrong with them in my opinion. I'm just not aware of how solid their support in SA is so that's a possible concern.

It has mobile processors.

The Clevo claims 6.5h battery life while the Lenovo claims 5h. Depends on how they test it though.

Try to get a 3rd generation intel chip - should be more efficient :)

I'd go for the 17". 15" is really quite limited!

Also, the Lenovo Y580 has a crappy resolution (720p) and I'm unable to find the model with the decent 1080p res for sale for under R15k anywhere in SA. This definitely strengthens the case for the 17" Clevo.

I currently have a 18.4" HP Pavilion which I bought in Hong Kong, and just I LOVE my big-ass screen, which worries me that I will not be happy with a 15.6" 720p monitor.... :(

How much is the Lenovo?

I have a Lenovo R500 Thinkpad...bought a couple years ago...not a day's problem yet....infact it has been more stable than my previous HP/Dell

Each to their own tho :)

You got lucky that's all, we have a few here that haven't given any problems .
We have about 1 in 5 failing the pic I posted is just of the ones that haven't been tossed away .

The company I work for almost exclusively use Mecer/Clevo laptops.
Must say that the newer models are impressive compared to the other branded laptops.

I currently have the W150 series for work.
i7 2630QM
8Gb Ram
and Nvidia GT 540M (always a plus for the odd game)

Long story short, the hardware is still legit and you get a warranty with Mecer I would guess.

I would advise you to look for the more metal/alum body, they had a series of plastic bodies and they were horrible....

I don't think the W370ET has a metal body.

Any idea what brand the motherboard on these machines are?

The Lenovo is about R10k, and if you're able to find the one with full HD 1080p (Model Y580 20994KU) , it's R16k-17k.

Well i would get the Mecer without even thinking about it .
I had my doubts when i was buying my laptop a while ago but i would defiantly buy Mecer again .
You get more for less .
