E-toll outcry related to tariffs, not tolls

Outcry is over
1) inefficient method of collection.
2) Tolling of existing roads - they should have build new roads
3) True cost to motorist was only made public at the end of the project
 
4) Corruption
5) Lack of transparency
6) arrogant mother****ers touting this system
 
Does the court allow direct and obvious lying ?

The public outcry wasn't about all about the tariffs, but it is about the tolls themselves.

We can all agree that we don't want any tolls, even if it was 1c/km

Not to mention that even if it was 1c, it wouldn't stay that way for long. We'd see the same monumental increases as the electricity price, or worse, pretty soon.

The outcry is over just smacking tollgates on roads that have been there for decades, that's what.
 
This is one case which may or may not succeed in the courts, but where the final outcome will be determined by the public.

Bring it on, we won't pay e-tolls and make the highways ungovernable.

What kind of blundering does not see the massive resistance from the beginning and surges forth nonetheless? E-Tolls represent one of the greatest betrayals of public trust in post-apartheid SA.
 
The whole principle of tolling is flawed. Why should taxpayers have to pay TWICE to use the roads that are supposed to be paid for from the tax that taxpayers pay?
 
My problem with e-tolling is two fold:

(1) Government has imposed fuel levies and allocates tax revenue to the construction of roads, these roads were in the first instance built and paid for using monies extracted on a taxpayer pays principle. It is double taxation - and taxation without representation - and a general misuse of the power to levy taxes for government to appropriate a public resource and run it as a private service (it isn't privatization in the conventional sense, its actually worse - it is corporatizing a resource to a state owned monopoly for the interests of whoever is paying to use the facility). If the fuel levy was reduced or it was written into law to glide down the fuel levy --- if a referendum were to be held would whether you "would accept e-tolling at rates which may not increase by more than CPI minus 2% pa and total taxation rates (income tax etc ...) were to be capped at their current rates increasing by CPI p.a" (after deconstructing what I've clumsily said) you'd have a fairly big exercise to decide how you would vote. My point is e-tolling is seen to be - and at this point is - double taxation and an attempt to undermine the "middle class".

(2) There a many many ways to implement a user pay principle and built into any sensible user pay principle is a recognition of their being a fixed supply and varying demand which should affect the price - almost every major open tolled bridge or tunnel I am aware of internationally has varied rates according to usage - so if you want to drive at 3am you should pay less. E-tolling is for patently improper reasons implementing one of the lease efficient systems for open road tolling resulting in grossly inflated implementation costs and the surest example of adminstrative costs which exceed the benefit.


The bottom line is it is evident that the consumer of e-tolled roads is going to be paying for nothing to their benefit because of a patronage created compulsory charge. This is the height of crony capitalism and tyranny.

The Gantry between Botha Avenue and the N1/R21 Flying Saucer interchange was only suddenly erected last month or the month before. Lying scumbag says we waited until the "last gantry went up before saying anything"? Like hell. The OUTA opposition has been underway for a good 2 years or so. Perhaps they were not formally organised into OUTA as such, but when e-Tolls were first announced to the public, there was an immediate outcry. In fact, there was an outcry when the first toll gates within the city limits went up when they put up the gantries at Zambezi.

I will not pay one red cent.
I already pay tax on everything else, including 3 sets of taxes that are meant to go towards road maintenance and safety.

Also, the outcry is not about the costs. It's about the decision to milk the populace with yet another tax, 70% of which goes towards the stupid methods implemented to actually collect said tax.

If the roads had simply been upgraded as part of a regular road maintenance project, the several billion rand that government has already paid to SANRAL to "bail them out" would probably have covered the cost of the upgrades and repairs already.
 
U meant to say the public bailed Sanral out. I love how the cANCer keep saying they pay x,y,z when its OUR MONEY they use
