Microsoft sells 40 million Windows 8 licenses

According to tech research firm StatCounter, about 1 percent of the world’s 1.5 billion or so personal computers – making a total of around 15 million – are actually running Windows 8.

StatCounter's 15million PC estimate seems to be in stark contrast to Soluto's estimates:

Below is Soluto's infograph:

As you can see, it says 3.12% of all Windows machines are running Win8.

According to my calculations, with Windows being on at least 90% of all PCs in the world (90% of 1.5billion = 1.35billion), 3.12% of 1.35billion gives us 42.12million PCs actually running Windows 8.

So, that 40million seems like the actual figure of PCs running Win8 and not 15million.

StatCounter only tracks statistics for websites making use of their services. Although they have a lot of websites on their books, they only track less than 3% of traffic to the Internet. So, if according to them, about 1% of users make use of Win 8, this figure may be a lot higher in reality.

That seems to make sense because you can activate your Win8 and then not make use of StatCounter services.

If it where not for the cheap upgrade, I doubt they would have many upgrades. But thanks to the $14.99 offer, I've already done two upgrades and a 3rd one is pending.
