I have recently moved and the maximum speed my exchange supports is 1mb/s. Is there a way to get this upgraded? Telkom says that they will do it eventually, maybe in a few months or a year or two. How can i fast track this?

Write to ICASA. I did back when the fastest speed at my exchange was 512kb/s. Telkom kindly told me that I should move if I wanted a faster connection. I wrote to ICASA instead and a month later Telkom called to inform me that my exchange had been upgraded.

Supply and Demand. Get everyone in the area to order 4mb/s lines and they will ugrade it pronto.

Thanks guys.

I will write to ICASA and see what happens.

As for the supply and demand route, its not that easy convincing people who seem happy with the minimum connection speed at present to fork out more cash. But thanks for that suggestion as well.

Good luck, you'll need it.

BTW where are you located? (suburb/city)

Hi MickeyD, located in Woodview, Durban. Seems just the road i am on that has a maximum speed of 1mb/s.

Have you applied for a 4Mbps line?

Do not take that website "report" as a true reading, it's stuffed up!

Apply for a 4Mbps line and let them officially tell you what the issue is.

I have applied for a faster line and all telkom says is that my exchange doesnt support it and i must wait till they upgrade it, but currently they have no plans to do that and cannot give me a date

If it was done telephonically, apply again and ask for a written response (email, etc.) detailing the reasons for rejecting your request. Without that you cannot progress to the escalation phase.

broadbandstats.co.za isn't always accurate either.

I'd say that if you have a stable, low latency and high throughput 1Mbps residential connection, you should be happy. Rather that than having a 10Mbps ADSL connection where you barely get 384kbps throughput and 800ms latency!

Could you please post your line attenuation, SNR margins and line speed values here? Then we can tell you if you'll be able to connect at higher speeds or if you're indeed limited by your distance to the DSLAM/exchange.

Sure, but how do i get that info? :wtf:

You can get your line attanuation, SNR margins & line speeds on your ADSL modem's web interface. Usually it is under ADSL stats.

How does one search on broadbandstats regarding your area code?

Mine is 021 - 979 xxxx

But when I search on my phone number , it's gives me 970 location code.
That's more to do with routing. The important part is that it will list your correct exchange code (eg. WDBV20). This will be a roughly accurate indicator of your exchange's capabilities.
