Hi guys

i am trying to get some prices for a new desktop and currently only looking at evetech. i like their website and teh way you can tweak you choice and add on extra bits. But not sure if their prices are good/bad/average ?

What other websites can i check out for prices on custom built desktops ? Not looking for anything hectic, just an i5, 8GB RAM and a mid-range GPU

Depends where you are, most places deliver nationwide but if you're in Pretoria or Centurion and looking for something local, where you can collect:

www.titan-ice.co.za

Otherwise, if you can bear to deal with couriers

www.wootware.co.za
www.rebeltech.co.za

Edit: Wootware in particular has brilliant service. They're in the middle of nowhere though (Somerset West) so you'll have to get it delivered, that's the only downside.

i would not touch esquire with a 10-foot pole. they may have good prices but i have just found their quality of product and customer service to be a little dodgy :-(

i'm based in JHB and see that u in Toti. what sort of machine would you rig up with basic details above, keeping price as low as possible

Unfortunately EveTech is the best computer shop in SA with regards to pre-built PCs. There prices aren't bad.

If you know your stuff around computer equipment and where to get cheap and decent components, then you'll be better off building up your own PC, because EveTech's gaming PC's are often unbalanced, especially in the sub R15k category.

So my recommendation to you would be to post what PC you've looked at, what kind of budget you have and what you'll be doing with the PC and then we'll make you PC build recommendations.

You can also have a look at http://comogam.net/pc-builders-guide/ for options and ask in the PC Build thread: http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php/415930-The-PC-Build-Thread

Update:
Esquire has outstanding service in Cape Town! I have to agree with you that the majority of their computer equipment are cheap brands that I don't like. The only decent things that I've seen were Asus motherboards and OCZ SSD's.

Like Pada said in is previous post. Let us know.

Put this together roughly on the above specs you asked with no mobo or HDD.
Corsair DDR3-1600 8GB (2x4GB) XMS3 Memory Module Kit = R580
i5 3570 3.4Ghz 6MB 1155 Ivy bridge = R2000
Gigabyte GV-R775OC-1GI Radeon HD7750 16xPCIE 128-bit 1GB GDDR5 w/HDMI + DVI-D + DSUB = R1270

Just a rough idea.

what sort of MOBO would you recommend for these components ?

These 3 i would recommend based on price so to say...

Gigabyte GA-B75M-D3H IB75 Motherboard w/A8 + G + LK + USB3 + SATA6 + DVI-D + HDMI = R970
Gigabyte GA-H77M-D3H IH77 Motherboard w/A8 + G + LK + USB3 + SATA6 RAID + DVI-D + HDMI = R1240
MSI Z77A-G43 IZ77 Motherboard w/A8 + G + LK + USB3 + SATA6 RAID + DVI-D + HDMI = R1270

This one is a bit more extreme but it's what i have at the moment.

Asus Maximus V GENE IZ77 Motherboard w/A8 + G + LK + USB3 + SATA6 RAID + HDMI + DP = R2500
what sort of MOBO would you recommend for these components ?

Just got a top end rig built through Evetech. Bought my CPU from Esquire and ram from Rebeltech, the rest I was compelled to get from Evetech to ensure a 2 year warranty on the build.

In the end their prices were actually better than Rebeltech and Wootware.

Esquires prices are very good but their range sometimes a bit lacking and I waited for over 2 weeks on a refund for an out of stock component their site listed as in stock.

PCint limited range, good pricing, NGR, Wootware, Rebeltech, Prophecy all much of a muchness...

It made sense for me to go Evetech for both the warranty and the no charge on assembly. If you not doing it yourself it could cost anywhere from R350-R800.

Just bought [-]this[/-] a new PC from Wootware Computers (their prices at the time of purchase were consistently cheaper than Evetech, TakeAlot, Titan-Ice and a few local stores such as Matrix and MR Comps).

CPU
RAM
MoBo
GPU
Case
PSU

@|3ash3r:
Those memory modules are pretty expensive @ R1179 for 16GB! I bought 4x 8GB G.Skill modules for like R1700 from Wootware, but it was slightly slower modules at CL10.

I got them for R949 at the time of purchase so I saved quite a bit there from the current price.

evetech prices ok..??? (then with a question mark) but service bad... personal experience!!!! like PADA above said it perfectly "unfortunately" is a good word, sorry somebody can't do good product and good service... maybe a social problem in SA, that reflects to service in general???

You're talking k@k. Most people would agree that it's impossible to get price, quality and service because you have to sacrifice one to get the other two.

Wootware has both good products and good service (personal experience!!!!) Got my PC within the time frame they specified and kept me abreast with the progress of the PC (great service). The PC is still working flawlessly (great products). Then we come to price. They were the cheapest around at the time of purchase for the PC I wanted (great prices).

So, I'd say in the case of Wootware, they're doing a great job all round. They're checking those price, quality and service blocks often!!
