Surprising average mobile Internet speed in South Africa

Having had the misfortune to be dependent on MTN's mobile data service (sic) for almost two days this article doesn't surprise me at all!
 
"South Africa is considered to be one of the countries on the forefront of mobile technologies, which makes it surprising that the average speed is at the bottom of the international list.

This may partly be due to the fact that many South Africans access the Internet through mobile devices which are not capable of handling the higher speeds"

That or the statement that SA is amongst the leaders in mobile broadband is a lie... I mean the story of the tortois and the hare is cute and all, but them hares are not taking breaks along the way.

Vodacom was one of the first networks in the world to launch 3G back in the day, if I remember correctly they were 3rd or something
 
Results are not surprising at all, they should have excluded those entry level Blackberries (BB 8520 ?). But in general the amount of BB's in use in SA, the crap BIS speeds, and congested towers - it's no surprise the speeds are so low.

Agree with this ! Makes sense - Canada and SA are the 2 slowest and coincidentally countries with high BIS infiltration!
 
Without the testing methodology the results are pretty meaningless and in direct conflict with results such as those from speedtest.net that do publish their methodology and reports substantially different results.
