DStv BoxOffice officially launched

Interesting. Could this be the beginnings of a services similar to Hulu in SA?

Naspers noted that DStv’s BoxOffice service reached monthly movie rentals of 400,000

~13K rentals per day. Really?

X R25(old/current price) = R10 000 000 extra revenue per month.

I have some doubts about this figure.

They need to offer this service to non-subsribers with decoders. Perhaps even to their lower tier subscribers.

Its open to everyone
DStv has officially launched an online version of its BoxOffice movie rental service, which is also available to non subscribers in South Africa.

Like I said.... they need to make this service available to everyone on the decoder.

So either you have a decoder with no subscription or a small subscription, it will make this more accessible to people without broadband.

In an ideal world they could have Pay-per view sport like that, I'd rather get that type of service via satellite then risk streaming it over the internet.

Anyone tried it? Are there are any plans for PS3, Xbox or Apple mobile apps?

So i have to pay 30 bucks and download it. On my connection it will take at least 8 hours to download and pay for the bandwith aswell.

Do they think people are stupid?

How much data?! Will there be lower res options with lower data sizes for tablets?

Surely they can't expect one to pay for the bandwidth used to download these movies?

A service like this isn't recommended with slow internet connections. If you want to use the service properly then you will have to get faster internet, like any other online VOD service.

Um... more like you are stupid for thinking this is aimed at you.

"BoxOffice Online movies can vary in size. Usually, movies will be between 800MB and 1.2GB in size. The time that they will take to download will vary, depending on your connection speed. We will give you an estimated download time for each movie before you decide to rent.

We strongly recommend that you access this service using an uncapped data package. If you are not on an uncapped package, we urge you to familiarise yourself with your Internet Service Provider’s data caps and per/MB or per/GB pricing to avoid high data bills."

Suppose it's fine if you have an uncapped 4mb or higher connection.

No one noticed no link to the box office website in the article?

Can't believe that people are even prepared to entertain this crap - shows you how many suckers there are out there

Old movies are R10.

Seems quite reasonable. They just need to add 720p and surround sound.
