Hi guys...sorry to do two threads in one day...but this is what happened. Took my Playa in for a service and was quoted about R9000.00 for the whole thing. I asked them to do just the important things as it is a bit much. That then came to about R6800.00 with a little discount they gave.

I went past there now again to see what the remaining work will cost as we looking at having it done now. Gave him my invoice where it has the "Work still to be done" section and he works it out. Now all of a sudden the remaining work is R11 000.00...sommer more than what the entire first service was supposed to cost?? WTF??? The work that was left over is as follows:

TC Gasket
Injector Service
Throttle Body Clean
High Pressure Fuel Filter
Engine Flush
Radiator Flush
Cambelt Kit
Wheel Balancing
New Powersteering Pump
Powersteering Pipe.

Does this make sense to any of you? I know that the cambelt thingy is a bit expensive cause they need to take your engine out of the car or something...so labour intensive....but why now more expensive than the full service would have cost in the first place? Maybe I will email a Bosch Service Centre and see if they can do a estimate for me on the above.

Ai tog. *sigh*

They tried the same with me. Car service city are scam artists they will always find new problems with your vehicle it's how they make their money tell them you only want a service and leave it at that but looks like its too late for you. Tell them to finish off and leave the rest. Then go to a proper mechanic.

Bosch Service Centre are better but depends which one because Bosch tried the same thing. Where are you located?

Well...the car already had the service done ... but I wanted them to tell me again how much the remaining work would be that they did not do the last time cause I asked them to just do the main service and fix the water leak etc. Now all of a sudden the remaining work costs more than the entire service would have cost in the first place? :-(

I have just emailed these guys for a estimate. They are on the Bosch network and close to where I am:

How many KM service is this?

They seem to be going way overboard with things.

The poor dear has 235 000 on the clock....but have not given any problems. The powersteering is working fine and not making any funny noises when I turn sharply etc, and I know for a fact that the power steering liquid does not leek....so not sure what is wrong with the old pump. The only thing that I know for a fact was wrong is the car was using water....had to top up the water every time I filled up with petrol...but that they fixed.

Yip they taking you for a ride trust me they did the EXACT same thing with me, also heard the same story from many people see below thread wrt the same problem

http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php/443769-Car-Service-City

Bosch would be the next best bet but they also will try some funnies in my experince.

Call a couple places let each place take a look and compare thats the only advice I can help you with. Sorry hope this helps.

Seems an excessive amount of repairs that need to be done. The price is ridculously high as well

You should ideally find someone that works from home and mostly on VW's and is trustworthy, these types of places are generally out to make money.

Unfortunately I've never had a VW so dont know who to recommend but if you browse the VW forum a bit you should find a few that get highly recommended.

For the close on R18000 they want to charge you you could have probably had the engine rebuilt and all the things on their list done as well.

Well, Roger from Car Service City just phoned back now after he said he will talk with his manager Danny. Now it is down to R9000.00 or something...but still the full service they wanted to do was R9900.00...and that is as per their records he told me. So I said to him..how the hell does it makes sense that before you left out some work that you wanted to do on the car it came to R9900.00 ... and now that I come back to you for the remaining work to be done after paying R6800.00 for work completed...it again comes to R9000.00????? Surely it is logical to think ... right... R9900.00 - R6800.00 comes to R3100.00??? No??

If it was not for his nice English accent soothing me I would have told him to EAT ME!

He said I must come back tomorrow and they will explain to me in person and go through the quote with me. I guess I will go to see what they say ... but I math is math and it does not make sense to me unless South Africa's inflation rate has gone up to like a gazillion percent or something???

good grief.

Was there problems with your power steering? Was it groaning? Sounds like you've been taken for a ride. Tell them to finish off the already too expensive work and take the car somewhere else.

Oh you see the problem, you went OOB .. and now your free service stuff from this month was used before you previous service stuff from last month was used and that has expired. The service shark has got you and you must pay, their notification system obviously has not sent you the last balance and does not know you are OOB, its just impossible for it to do that!

That milage is not that high :)

Take the car to a decent VW dealership for a quote. Get them to explain exactly what is wrong with each item they want to replace. Check to see if there is anything in common on the two quotes, and look at getting those fixed, but find a workshop that you can trust.

Cambelt change on a Polo is quite expensive. They usually replace the waterpump at the same time

Not that expensive, if it's an electric steering pump that can be around R5k but I think they only put that in the Polo's after Ockies.

Last time I had it @ VW Bruma they wanted to charge me R20 000.00 *eeek*
