Are MWEB Throttling Premium Uncapped accounts now?

I'm serving my notice period with MWEB so I thought I'd see what my "Premium" Uncapped account can really do. I've been downloading some um... err... Linux Distros and what not 24/7 for a couple of weeks now. On Thursday I received my first ever "Abuse" notification from MWEB (been on Uncapped with them since April 2010). I wasn't too surprised seeing that I had pulled over 300GB in 14 days. I had a bit of banter with MWEB's Abuse department via email - them saying I should opt for an unshaped product due to my high use and me saying that my line was downloading at unshaped speeds 24/7 so why would I even need to consider that as an option etc. etc.

Anyway... since Friday I've noticed my Linux Distros downloading at what appeared fairly reduced speeds. I didn't think much of it but today I decided to investigate a little further... and you guessed it - my connection is now being throttled. Initially I thought it could just some iffy speed tests but nope, it's definitely being throttled by MWEB.

MWEB @ 10:27am
ping: 15 ms
down: 1.55 Mb/s
up: 0.40 Mb/s

AfriHost @ 10:45am
ping: 14 ms
down: 4.41 Mb/s
up: 0.38 Mb/s

Afrihost @ 10:47am (just to be sure)
ping: 14 ms
down: 4.23 Mb/s
up: 0.30 Mb/s

MWEB @ 10:54am
ping: 14 ms
down: 0.99 Mb/s
up: 0.41 Mb/s

MWEB @ 10:57am
ping: 19 ms
down: 2.67 Mb/s
up: 0.41 Mb/s

MWEB @ 11:00am
ping: 16 ms
down: 1.79 Mb/s
up: 0.39 Mb/s

And one more MWEB test just to be sure

MWEB @ 11:37am
ping: 14 ms
down: 1.62 Mb/s
up: 0.39 Mb/s

Yip... definitely being throttled. It's my last month with them and I've already used 390GB for the month so I'm not too phased but this made me wonder if they're not throttling their biggest bandwith users on the Premium Uncapped package by default now or just after they flag you as an abuser?

Maybe it's just me :p

Hmmm....

Hi,

I had the exact same issue. There seems to be a problem with the Protective Access feature for your account. If you switch this off, then the speeds drop to 1Mbps. I also have a 4Mbps account. I sent most of Saturday afternoon trying to sort this out.

You're 100% correct. I would have never even bothered to investigate further but my Protective Access was disabled and either it's always been like that or it was changed recently. I blame MWEB ...

Oh well... maybe I'll touch 700GB this month or maybe my account will be cancelled before I do. Let's see which happens first then :/

Thanks!

I had this same issue 2 months back, luckily I knew someone that knew how to fix it etc.
It's good to have this on the forums :)
