Telkom has big plans for fibre

The heading of the article for some reason lead me straight to imagining a Kellogg's All Bran advert. Big Plans for Fibre ...

I am really hoping that enough steam is built up for Telkom before government spoils the party. I suspect that the previous CEO laid a really good foundation and set up a course where the minister had to be seen to screw up such that after a rockey patch the successor could finally implement the strategy.
 
How in the world could VDSL compete with a Symmetrical solution?

VDSL upload is only 3Meg. MYBB keeps forgetting to mention this.
 
Telkom are all talk and no action......

It has been 4 years since the announcement of 10Mbps ADSL and I am still waiting..... :mad:

So I take everything Telkom says with a pinch of salt.....
 
Great, more solutions that offer no benefit to the average broadband consumer.

Uh, Telkom serves Government and Large business/enterprises, Small-to-medium Business, and Consumers.

Telkom has been providing MetroClear to enterprises for a few years, replacing ATM.

This change is probably only about bring Metroclear to SMBS to replace higher speed diginet.

MetroClear is most definitely not targeted at consumers (unlike VDSL).

These could be good offerings for businesses though that need WAN connections site to site and currently use Diginet leased lines. Of course a lot of this depends on price.

ADSL/VDSL is not such a good deal as it sounds for site to site VPNs because (as previously mentioned) your performance is limited by the upload speed, not the download speed. You also have matters of support levels and contention. ADSL is a best endeavours service so it would be risky to rely on it for business critical data comms.

That's exactly my point. It SHOULD be targeted at consumers. In Europe consumers can access these sorts of services in their homes at reasonable prices. In South Africa we have to *** en betaal.

ALL of these grandiose plans have one major achilles heel

*CABLE THIEVES*

In a certain upmarket area near where I reside cable has been stolen again for about the third time.

A large segment of the residents now do not have and are unlikely to have XDSL or ANY variant of anything that needs a cable.

They also do not have good cell signal ( downs and dales -- topography )

Third party wireless operators complain about being too busy !

I see THIS scenario as being the real one going forward.
 
Could someone please explain to me the point of Etherlink? I dont understand why you would use an Etherlink service when you could just use VDSL?

VDSL would generally be seen as a best effort service whereas the others are generally guaranteed services backed by specific SLA & guarantees should cables be stolen etc.
 
I have more faith in a bakkie of dudes rolling out hundreds of kilometers of cat6 cable to every house connecting via neighborhood switches, connected in a mesh with fiber than Telkom...

Anyone have a bakkie?

Im not trolling or anything. Im just curious. Your upload on a 20Mb line is max 2Mbps and down 20 Mbps, the 2Mbps is still better than 1792? Is the VDSL option not better valued?

Not if you absolutely need the upload speed. See a company that also hosts their own websites here. Or allows customers to download files from their site. Also, as mentioned earlier, this service would not have VDSL's "best effort" SLA, but something with teeth. Imagine if your company's website is down for a few days because of a Internet outage.

This is not aimed at residential users, most of the time.
