R200,000 online scam: Hawks arrests

Just saw it on eNews. It's good news, scammers were arrested. May be this american guy will be given a reward.

People who fall for these scams deserve to be penniless. The fact that we still get so many of these emails everyday just goes to show that there are enough dumbasses populating the world to affirm the old adage that a fool and his money are easily parted.

The only reason these thugs are still trying these scams is the greed of the victims.

I can't believe there are still bozos around that fall for these things. Makes you wonder about the gene pool.

Irrespective of the naivety of the people being scammed (and really, naivety is not a sound reasoning for it being deserved), why is it that it takes an American being scammed for something to be done?

I have spoken with the SAPS fraud division and they claim that no case will be opened in these circumstances as the person being defrauded handed over the cash willingly.

No matter how many times I have explained that they cannot refuse to open a case, and that is precisely the difference between fraud and theft, they refused. So are they now setting a precedent that each and every reported case will be investigated properly, or is this merely PR?

It is PR...

It comes down to this being the Hawks. They're not your standard yuppy cop that sits at the station waiting for the next guy to complain about his rims being stolen.

The victim, 48, who was looking for business opportunities, and the Nigerian met on an online professional network.

Translation: LinkedIn

Came home one day to find my wife very exited. They had a major property deal in the works.
Three riverfront properties and a planned private school - not strange as this is in the same area as Oprah's.
'Wow. That's brilliant, honey'
All this from a woman who urgently needs to leave Nigeria and is planning to bring a group of orphans with her.
'Uh, really?'
And she has a major cash investment there she is planning to pay out to fund everything.
'Um. Babe. Sit down for a minute. We need to talk.'

Most people may be alert to these scams due to awareness, but the rest may be unsuspecting or their trust may be misplaced or violated. Irrespective of how money got out their hands, I think our focus and that of law enforcement show be towards those @&$#€ fraudsters. Their punishment should be deterring....

These two criminals should be dragged behind a car and the video uploaded to youtube. Hopefully it will make a few other would-be scammers think twice.

I work part-time for a particular free website builder company, and everyday we close hordes of bank fraud scams, pet transport, and MMORPG phishing scams (besides dealing with other violations). This area is obviously making a lot of money otherwise my team would not be so busy :(
It is a not nice to deal with people who have been defrauded, some losing a lot of money. :(
