Telkom cable theft causes major service disruptions

Our Law enforcement agency need to treat copper theft as a serious crime, with long jail terms for perpetrators.

This is the 5th time in less than a year that my service has been ripped out of the ground. Make this a case of treason and throw the book at the morons that do this kind of damage.

If I recall correctly (correct me if i am wrong), their was a process put into place to curb down on this, whereby there were new laws passed in order to make it illegal to sell copper to scrap yards, meaning, the seller must have proof of where he / she got the copper from and the scrap yard dealers had to keep track of the copper they purchase. On the other hand if these thieves are caught we sit with another problem, i.e. the current processing of these cases do not get top priority in our courts.

Its a can of worms. Here in Harties we had a major cable theft problem. So much so everyone was looking for the thieves, even I was hiding in the bushes with a 9mm waiting for them.

Eventually we caught our thieves. white male with 3 zimbabweans. Had all the equipment to open the manholes. Go figure....

Telkom want us to help them when we see cable being stolen, but when we want Telkom to fix congested exchanges they say no.

F U Telkom, it is a two way street, you help me I help you. Simple.

Proactively alarming critical and sensitive cable routes and employing services of armed security firms.

What happened to the SAPS's 'zero tolerance policy' ?
Is that only reserved for drunken-driving ?

What should really happen, is that anyone caught tampering with cables (along with rhino in the game parks) should be shot dead on sight - either by the SAPS or these armed security guards. That might then stop other bright-sparks from getting themselves involved in these criminal activities.

I live close to the East Rand mall, going for 6 years, and telkom simply does not install phone lines in my suburb. It's crazy!

You guys are lucky! 5 times & Telkom still replaced your cables....it happened only once in our area and Telkom refused to lay new cables! Bloody unfair of Telkom!
But I agree those thieves need to hung from the very same telephone poles - as a detterent to others!
What pisses me of further is that Telkom paid several Hundred Millions for some brilliant new technology - which according to them - if a cable was cut in an area, an alarm would immediately go of at the exchange it was connected to. A task force would immediately appear on the scene and catch the scoundrels red-handed! Looks like it was a big fail!
The Telkom directors who signed of that contract & the company who sold it needs to be brought to book! Sadly that won't happen as it would be just be some ANC's cronie garage technology company.....for all I know Telkom may have just been sold little bells for each exchange - supposed to ring with the vibration given of from cable theft!
