Eight boys have died after attending initiation schools around KwaMhlanga and Verena, Mpumalanga police said on Friday.

"An investigation has been launched and a post mortem will be conducted to determine the cause of death," spokesman Colonel Leonard Hlathi said in a statement.

He said the incidents occurred on Wednesday and Thursday.

Six of the victims died after they were admitted to hospitals.

Two of them died at initiation schools. The boys were aged between 15 and 21.

Police were also verifying whether the initiation schools were registered, Nyathi said.

Can someoone tell what the difference between registered and non-registered would mean? The way I see the "school" can just get anybody to chop-chop anyway. Its not like they're going to be policed.

I have zero sympathy for these idiots. Lot's of cases every single year but nobody has learned a thing.

Careful there. I've heard from a few of my friends who follow this kind of thing that your family will almost disown you if you don't go to the "bush". So some of them have very little choice but to go.

It is rather early for initiation schools, registered or not and to all the people calling this idiotic you honestly don't know the how hard it is to be mocked by your peers, so as unsafe as it is some of us had to go through it and didn't die

I don't think they are calling any one person idiotic, they are calling the entire system idiotic.
Seriously, this is the twenty first century. People need to start abandoning their silly superstitions.

Someone need to say no and start the end of this.
It's oke to be different.

But just yesterday Bafana Bafana hired a witch doctor to give them a muti mix.....um, I don't think it will happen anytime soon.

hey we all had peer pressure when it came to drugs and alcohol. But no one looked down at me for not wanting to chop of my dick.

Shame on any parent who forces his kids to go to this things. Registration makes a difference because the government have to send medical doctors there to assess the kids once in a while from what i heard.

Good for you! At the end of the day... who has more courage?
The one who chooses to go against the mainstream and refuses to bow to the superstition knowing full well that he will face condemnation for it! :)

23 Initiates die in Mpumalanga

A total of 23 initiates have died in Mpumalanga, police said on Thursday.

All the deaths had taken place at legal initiation schools since last Wednesday, Colonel Leonard Hlathi said.

He said 23 murder cases had been opened, but that no arrests had been made yet.

The deaths were in the Nkangala district towns of Evander, Middelburg, Belfast, Kwaggafontein, Siyabuswa, Verena and KwaMhlanga.

In Evander, police were investigating an inquest docket after an initiate died after complaining of stomach pains, said Hlathi.

On Tuesday, traditional affairs MEC Simon Skhosana sent his condolences to the families of 10 of the initiates and said his department would investigate.
