Police website hack: DA blows a gasket

Very poor choice for a headline Mr Vermeulen....

What would you have done if you were a whistle-blower and found that your details were now in the public domain because of such a hack and or lack of security???

Most probably also blew a casket or two.....

DA blows a gasket?

I think they refer to this: "It is beyond belief that 16,000 whistle-blowers " by Dianne Kohler Barnard. Which is incorrect. its 16000 records. Many have nothing to do with whistleblowing. Though there are enough in there to be worried. I think this is an easy mistake for a non-IT person to make.

Disagree. In the context of the message (which I read as an opinion piece), that is an apt description of DKB's reaction.

There is no need for Barnard to exaggerate the numbers. The situation is bad enough as it is.

By over-reacting about the wrong figures. The DA is making a fool of itself. If DKB had only read the information and comments on MyBB, she would have been much better informed.

I agree to both these statements. I think the DA and the government needs to up its InfoSec game dramatically. Im sure they will. Hopefully DKB brings enough attention to these security breaches that they get the serious attention they deserve.

Agreed. Lesson 1 in arguing/debating - come with the facts. Leaking even one whistleblower's information is obviously wrong, but by engaging in sensationalism and not understanding the facts of the issue, I wouldn't want her to be making any decisions if the DA ever got in to power! If this statement is anything to go by, she'd be a disaster of a police minister.

I would focus a little less on what the politician is saying and a little more on what the hacker is saying in that article. Flippen bonehead that one.

Yes, but he has been thoroughly vilified, lambasted, trodden down and a whole lot of other less savoury things done to in the other threads about his actions.

My gosh.. The criminal here is the hacker. But he is treated like some celebrity while the police (a victim here) are being lambasted. I'm not saying they are angels, but I like to look at things objectively when I can.

I'm sure they are getting the necessary expertise in to do what can be done to prevent this type of thing in the future. Now I wish people would dry their panties and accept that cyber security in SA generally lags behind some other parts of the world. We still have a bit of growing up to do in that department.

You'd swear the SAPS is the first organisation successfully infiltrated in the history of the world... Newsflash! It happens even to companies that are extremely adept at cyber security.

Nothing new about that. They would blow a gasket if Zuma didn't tie his shoelaces.

Ja, I don't think you would be too happy if the local crime lord found out you were the one reporting his activities to the police... It is a fair reaction.
