This domain extension will not have any impact on the Internet, whatsoever. The co.za domain will still outrank it by far, not even to mention the normal TL Domains, such as the .com, .net or .org.
House, you are quite right, co.za will always be greater as it has been around for years and these new gTLD’s are just about to get going. This however this does not mean that we don’t need these or they are not required.
When the window for applications for the new gTLD’s opened up early last year, ZACR / ZADNA made what I think was a very wise decision to apply for .joburg, .capetown & .durban. This was done from a tourism as well as I presume commercial aspect. .London, .NewYork, .Sydney etc. have all applied, imagine if they had not applied and this window never opens again, not having our own gTLD’s could have a huge negative impact on the industry.
In saying that, I think there is also a business case for these, a small electrician who wants .co.za and finds it taken but only operates in JHB could register bobselectrical.joburg or something like that. Multinationals will all register their companies so that they have the domains but they could also run promotions / incentives specific to the region. That’s just one example but there could be thousands.
There are ~1930 new gTLD applications, most will be small, some will get into the millions of registrations, some be internal for corporates. I think time will tell if they will be a success or not
Still have no need for it though
_TrXtR_, don’t you want TrXtR.joburg for your own website
