Telkom Mobile price cuts: Why aren't other operators doing it?

simply put, they're vultures praying on us as they know we don't have much choice. Ever notice how MTN and Vodacom are always the last to reduce costs to consumers?

Although I think if the shoe is on the other foot and Telkom was the big dog in the mobile provider industry then well... The shoe would have been on the other foot. I mean it's Telkom we are talking about here. If they had this attitude with their ADSL prices then I would have nothing but love for them. As it stands... I can only congratulate them on this very positive move.

The other operators have to step up >)

to be slightly fair on this:

call rates of 10c per minute are profitable on an efficient network and lets face it VC and MTN have more legacy equipment.

Yeah Telkom Mobile has a freaking awesome network to be honest..... Where will you see a speedtest on you phone with a telkom mobile sim reaching 12Mbps and 3Mbps upload...... Its pretty damn nice to have pages load instantlly and photo's shared pretty damn fast.

I actually saw it was faster one time to share a photo over the internet than bluetooth.......

They need MORE towers though. Coverage is good in residential but poor when traveling. Thats the only problem with this deal.

Cell C should join pretty soon...

Vodacom will have 10,000 thousand reason why this is wrong and should not be done...

MTN will say nothing and will most probably bring out some or other meaningless promotion....

At least Vodacom went down to R1.20/min with their Anytime Per Second prepaid option, and they have good national coverage (unlike Cell C, where one struggles to get calls into our out off).

This TM option is very good if you are in PTA or JHB and can be used nicely in a second phone.
 
^ it also quite squarely competes with that Neotel deal and probably has about the same coverage. A dual sim smartphone and you are set or even just a landline replacement.

What I am really hoping is that this is the precedent for Telkom to bring out a product for SMMEs that competes with VC's One Net Express but also uses their POTS infrastructure and a fixed line VoIP option. The idea of hunt group that can include "home phones" is both frightening and potentially useful for small businesses - businesses will need to however be in an area with coverage.

As a prepaid (MTN) customer, I'm always astonished that MTN and Vodacom are allowed to rip off prepaid customers and how there appears to be no protection offered by the service providers for the poorest sections of the community that cannot really afford the sums that are scammed off them.

It's no surprise to me that other countries (such as Zambia, currently) take them to task for ripping off their citizenry, but I would expect our Government to offer more protection for the poor and impoverished.

Or maybe not....
