Cold, hard truth about fixed broadband in South Africa

Can somebody please show this article to the new minister?

EDIT: Bring on IPC annihilation and a better bandwidth model for now (bit stream?) and let ICACA crack the whip!

Why is South Africa the only African country on that chart ?
 
Telkom. No matter how you look at it Telkom is the elephant blocking the door to the room while the DoC and ICASA stand outside.

I honestly don't think that any of the high ranking communication officials even know how the broadband infrastructure in SA works. Just they there to talk k@k and pick up a massive pay check.

So that stats show that it is piss poor - apart from employing a minister who actually knows more about broadband than phoning Telkom if he has problems, what needs to be done in order to improve the situation viewed against the demographics and income per household of our country?

If African countries keep benchmarking themselves against African countries they are not going to go anywhere.

Yes, benchmarks against African countries can be useful to check how a geographic region is doing, but you really want global benchmarks to see if you are heading in the correct direction.

Clearly SA is not :(
 
It will not improve until the rest of the economics in this country improves. How do you increase the broadband penetration when we sit with an estimated unemployment rate of around 55%?

If every employed person gets broadband we will still only have around 45% penetration.

So yes blame Telkom but also blame the whole government who is failing miserably in creating an environment where businesses can grow and prosper.

Who paid for the study? It is as a result of the different "unions" or "organisations" that SA belong to ...

Why should they drop the prices if they are making a killing as it stands? No one is really complaining besides some people on an online forum.

Let me qualify this...

IMO the fixed line penetration will not improve until many other factors are addressed (unemployment, electricity provision, socia-political issues, rural migration, etc.), instead it will get worse but the fixed line broadband experience will improve for those in urban areas. Rural and under-developed areas can forget about fixed line broadband, it just ain't going to happen. LTE will be used to service those areas...
 
If they do not bring down the line rental and access there will not be no increase in adsl uptake.
i would love to get adsl but if you add every hting it will cost a crap load of money. i am using 8ta 10 gig for 199.
more and more people are removing there phones. the figures support this

The statistics will not wake up the government, and indeed nothing will ever wake them up.

The tribe they run does not grasp the concept of technology and progress. If broadband in SA ever gets to a decent level, it will not be because of our current government, it will be solely because of pressure from outside it

SA doesn't seem to have been included in the OECD's report so presumably the MyBB staff added it. I'm curious where they sourced SA's data from.
