SA Internet population close to 14 million

All thanks to mobile phones...

What I do not understand... how can they determine the number of adults? They mention they use a formula based on browser types, how does that tell you whether its an adult and or a minor? Makes no sense.

I wonder what that figure would have been if it was left just to Telkom and the DoC...

Good question - I don't think that's an accurate number in that sense.

Would it not have been better to just include everyone who has access to the www in SA?

Multiple device usage... and 1 or 2 unique browsers per device per link!!!

Work PC (via fibre links)
Work notebook (MNO sim1)
Work smartphone (MNO sim2)
Home PC (DSL)
Home tablet (MNO sim3)
Home ipad (DSL and wifi)
Home smartphone (MNO sim4)
Business notebook (MNO sim5)
Business smartphone (MNO sim6)

So how many adults am I ???

So how many adults am I ???
The inverse is also true - multiple people accessing the internet through a single machine (internet cafe, one computer per household, schools, universities etc). It is therefore challenging to find an accurate number.

More about these stats:

In June, SA produced 19,995,454 Unique Browsers registering 564,537,597 Page Views. 9,601,031 Browsers accessed SA sites via mobile devices registering 225,245,972 Page views. Browsers to SA mobile sites increased by 29% totalling 6,143,036 UBs.

The methodology for counting was to use EM cookie data and then checked that against usage patterns across devices by using EM panel data and then weighted it all against AMPS.

“EM will count this as three Unique Browsers, but marketers are interested in reaching people not machines. Therefore, we weighted EM’s Unique Brower data against AMPS’ multiple device usage and the EM panel to translate the number from browsers to people.”

So this number is actually far closer to reality than anything we've seen before.

What it proves is that local business should be spending a lot more in digital because a lot more of the population is online than previously thought.

They access the internet. Which is what the title states.

Accessing the internet is not the same as visiting a (South African) web site. More and more aps are used to access the internet.
