MTN continues to lose SA subscribers

“MTN South Africa felt the effects of weaker consumer demand and was slow to respond to aggressive price competition in both voice and data offerings,” the group said.

Gee, you idiots really think so?

Let me be simplistic:

Loss of 600 000 customers at an average of R50 spend per month

600 000 * R50 = R30M * 12 months = R 360 000 000.00

Over a quarter of a billion in potential revenue and it's a marginal

MTN Group has reported that its total subscriber base for South Africa has declined “marginally” by 600,000

Wow!! I'd love that R360M marginal revenue.

They have become useless. I cannot find any technician that is competent enough to attend even a simple problem. They have great coverage, and I have been happy with them for over 10 years, but I also now have had it.

Problem is that in SA customer service is sorely lacking so where should one go? Maybe wait for AfriHost to implement voice?
:p

well using your R50 estimate 350M is a speck compared to R15000M (R15B)

but MTN is defiantly dropping the ball

yip I'm cancelling my contract in Dec and going prepaid, from now on I'll just buy the phone outright - fookum!!

now they harassing me about renewing my contract :wtf:

Same here. Cancelled in July. Ported my number as well for good measure.

No schit sherlocks, you guys are about two YEARS too slow.Seriously two years ago I was happy with MTN rates and my contract with them which was standing for 12 years, ever since then(two years ago) they have been pathetic, even Vodacom is much more competitive than them.

Last year I ported to Cell C and haven't looked back.

My contract with MTN will end shortly. Coverage is really bad where I live and spend most of my time each day. Their voice and data rates are also way too high.

From now on I'll do the prepaid thing. Only question is, to who do I port? Cell C would be my first choice, but I don't know how serious their network issues is at the moment.

after being with them for almost 10 years, I was one of the 600 000 that ported to cell c :)
I am sure it will not stop there .... they have no sense of customer service .... felt like I was dealing with a guv dept any time I had to call into their call center ... not to mention the terrible call quality and dropped calls.

while cell c has issues ... still feel they serve me better than mtn

this part makes me

The group said that revenue increased 9.8% to R65.248 billion, while operating profit grew marginally, to R19.596 billion, from R19.184 billion before.

shows how much they're ripping us off

If you are on prepaid then there is no risk if you give Cell C pre-paid a try for a month and decide its not working for you then just port over to vodacom prepaid or telkom mobile prepaid until you're happy with your network.

Thats the beauty of porting, nobody even knows you ported they just keep on calling you and getting called by you from the same number there is virtually no downtime at all.:D

I'm happy with my 083 number on Cell C in my areas.

Don't you guys find the Pre-paid option is just more expensive than the contract options? My average monthly spend with MTN is around R600. That includes Data + Voice and obviously the large part of it is for the phone I got through them. So Voice and Data prices are around R300 p/m.

Having said that I also like the idea of never having to worry about how much data / airtime is left and just continue. Then again, the last time I did a comparison between Pre-paid and Contract was in 2011. Things have changed that much?

I will be part of the next 600 000!

amen brother, I will also be part of the next 600 000. I can actually port anytime I want right now but I am just currently testing other networks on prepaid sims and waiting for the right deal on the right network to come around and them boom I'm gone.

Its all relative when I left my MTN contract I went on to Cell C pre paid for a few months to test the network out.Once I was satisfied however Cell C launched their 99c straight up contract deal so I realized that for a mere R100 per month more than my current spend on voice and data(R200 voice plus R75 data and some sms's now and then) I could get a contract with an iphone 5 included for R399(200 anytime minutes per second billing +500mb data) so for me personally my iphone 5 costed me +-R100x24=R2400.

So for me yes a contract on Cell C straight up was cheaper since I could get the iphone 5(worth R8799) for an effective R2400 over 24 months compared to prepaid.

That's the advantage to contracts - upgrade every two years and get a new phone - without having to pay thousands upfront for a handset.

I do think I need to look at going to a different carrier next year (When my MTN contract comes up for renewal) - but I can only make that decision then - MTN might be more competitive then. For now, I might as well carry on with MTN as there is nothing I can do about it until next year this time.

Phone them you may be surprised,my contract was that MTN one with a tv and phone included and it was relatively new only a few months old,I called MTN 808 for a figure and the next day their department phoned me back I had to pay something like R1675 to get out of my contract!Paid them immediately and went to pre paid.

What ever you do don't CANCEL your MTN contract or you will loose your number just tell them you want to port to MTN prepaid.Once that part is done you go to the network of your choice and they will do the rest for you.
