Where does one buy the LTE device outright cash without going contract way and prices of the device.

Does each Telkom Direct/ Telkom Mobile store charge differently or the same across the board.

Which devices are supported exactly since Telkom Mobile are using unique freq. 2300 Mhz?

If you managed to buy an LTE device cash from Telkom Store/ Telkom Mobile which store ?

Hi All

LTE has been enabled across all Telkom Mobile’s prepaid tariff plans (8ta more, Prepaid PSB Data Promo, prepaid per second billing and prepaid per minute billing tariff plans) and all old Voice and Data contract
plans (post-paid and hybrid).

Old Internet plans including Internet 5 Promo, Internet Saver, Smart contract, Saver and 10GB + 10GB Internet contract plans can now also enjoy LTE services on data.

To enjoy our super-fast LTE speeds subscribers need to ensure they :

1. Fall within an LTE coverage area – you can access the following link to confirm if you fall within an LTE coverage area: http://www.telkommobile.co.za/coverage/lte/
2. Have an LTE enabled device. The Telkom Mobile network does not support circuit switched fall-back for voice services, however, if you have an LTE capable device that works on the 2300MHz frequency band you can enjoy faster LTE speeds on data.
3. LTE devices available on our network include: Huawei E3276 LTE USB modem, Huawei E5776 LTE Mi-Fi and the Huawei B593 router

Regards
Telkom Mobile

Would like to know as well.
Especially a LTE modem/router which supports all 4 networks will be better if something like that is available. At the moment I have both 8ta and Afrihost contracts. (MTN network)

I'm not sure if the Huawei E5776 is an all-band device (suspect it is) but I'm going assume most people would want the B593 LTE CPE for the external antenna ports. The E5776 is quite commonly available but quite steep at R3500.00. (Edit: Orange does it for R2400.00)

I've seen the B593 for sale on classifieds sites mostly and then the Vodafone branded one on a cheap data contract from Vodacom. I recently obtained mine on auction and it was second hand - pretty chuffed considering the retail price. (Comx, wantitall sell them) One requires the B593U-12 specifically for Telkom Mobile LTE support (2300MHz)

@Wirelesswarrior are you aware the LTE spectrum on 8ta/telkom mobile network is totally different from current SP. *highly doubt you have a device in the market that can support all LTE networks in South Africa including 8ta*.

I know for 8ta/TM it's supposed to be 2300MHz despite some rumblings that it isn't. I've not used the E5776 but since TM sell it on contract, it definitely supports TM LTE.

But yes - all-band might be a pipe dream for LTE.

I'm still intrigued by prepaid LTE. It states clearly here (Terms and Conditions # 12) that LTE is not available on prepaid yet I've done 10GB already since the weekend. Also as mentioned before, the TM shop I dealt with gave me an LTE prepaid SIM without a fight. Odd.

I did a SIM swap just recently for an MTN LTE SIM. I've yet to see LTE reception on my iPhone 5 in any of the MTN LTE coverage areas. I don't know what is up with that...

I can't speak for Telkom Mobile though since I only use the LTE service on the B593 CPE.

IMG_0173.jpgYou need to ask MTN to enable LTE on your sim .. had the same done but needed to call and enable ...

Ah man, I wish they would get their stories straight across channels! Thanks, will try get it activated tomorrow so I can drill my Afrihost bundle.

I think it's best if we ask those questions in the MTN sections, not Telkom Mobile. ;) Admittedly I also played a part in taking things off topic in here. :p

i just phoned 8ta, apparently its "coming" not here yet

Hey Wirelesswarrior, which model of LTE Router do you have. As i see Vodacom have the B2000 which is apparently a Huawei B593u12, but from the info I can find it does not support TDD which is what Telkom Mobile run their LTE on.

With regards to the frequency issue i see the below has a firmware that can "unlock" them.

Does anyone have some insight as i am keen to test and play with LTE on Telkom Mobile

Mine is the B593u-12. It's specifically the 2300MHz Telkom issue one. I've seen the Vodafone branded one on a R169 (?) 500MB Vodacom contract - it's sure to be the 1800 / 2100MHz B593u-91.

I have the Huawei E392u-92(ebay) for Telkom and the E392u-12(Bidorbuy) for MTN.

Thanks for the info guys, can anyone else point me in the direction of getting an LTE modem, or router that would work on TM and Vodacom??

You can't get one that will work on those two service providers. Vodacom, MTN and Cell C can be used on the same device and then Telkom Mobile all on its lonesome.

All to do with frequencies or LTE Band - Vodacom, MTN and Cell C all uses 1800 MHz and Telkom mobile use 2300 MHz. Try to get a modem that can do both. Just take note that in future the LTE frequency will move to 800MHz - the so-called digital dividend after the migration of TV to digital TV
