IT salaries in SA: how much people really earn

Interesting, some of those numbers are lower than I expected.

It's disconcerting to me that management makes so much more than the "professionals", but I guess this because many companies believe that they need to make (often technical) people managers in order to justify a higher salary?

Maybe I'm missing something, but I've never seen the sense in moving a brilliant technical person into a new, administrative position to justify paying them more... In my opinion professionals should often be paid more than their managers! :)

Depressing :/ Just depressing.

I wish I never looked at those figures, cause clearly I'm working for the wrong company :P

Seems far more in line with the industry as a whole than the surveys they normally publish.

Can we get some better statistics on those figures? Alone they mean almost nothing. You need to at least give the 25th and 75th percentile. Maybe add some box plots.

This seems a little on the high side for non-managers and a lot on the low side for top management.

I know good deal of people getting well below some of the lowest figures (like R6k packages), CTO/CIO's often getting well above the R1m mark.

Bud, if you're not earning those figures, you need find yourself a new job. If you're earning that, its your own fault. Sorry to sound harsh, but its true.

That's the problem with averages...

Iam shocked too. Perhaps iam working for wrong company too. But then most jobs i have seen in advertised in Cape Town seem to be in line with my current salary or slightly higher. Yet this survey tells a different story. Could it be, Cape Town offers the lowest salaries

Anecdotal = DBN < CPT > JHB

Taking this article with at my next performance appraisal. I'm clearly still well underpaid.
