E-tag numbers - over 1.4-million unsold

Use them as paving on a new road. Little bit of concrete and a few million e-tags should do the trick. That way we get to put them to practical use, and we get the satisfaction of driving over them every day...
 
In her reply, Peters said Sanral had spent about R25.3 million during the period January to October this year on campaigns to encourage the public to buy e-tags.

This was in addition to about R11.3m spent in November and December last year.

They throw these figures around as if they mean nothing, but that's around 600 to 700 low cost houses that won't be built. So that's around 2000 to 3000 people who won't get a proper roof over their heads because the government decided to further throw money at marketing a dead duck.

Add to this the 850 000 houses that won't be built because of the project itself, and you have an overall figure of around 3.8 million people who will remain homeless, or living in shacks, because of just one single waste of money project by this government. That's 15% of all the people in this country living under the poverty line.

The ANC could have helped to alleviate 15% of the poverty concerns in this country by not wasting money on the GFIP. This would have gone a long way in sorting out crime in this country, as well as socio-economic factors.

Instead, we have a few poorly built roads, managed and profited by companies outside of SA, maintained by a company that's approaching financial ruin, at an escalated cost so exorbitant that it makes it one of the most expensive roads in the world, if not the most expensive. And this is brought about because the existing road maintenance fund was mismanaged to the point of no repair. So another few billion Rand wasted there...
 
If I were the CEO, I would not want to turn e-tolls on knowing that it will fail. Watch the December deadline come and go...

You talk as if Gov took money that was meant for building. Note: I don't support e-tolls I think there are alternative ways of paying the loan that sanral has other than e-tolls
 
Its is a shame that a corrupt fraudulent government has no shame. But, Zuma knowing that he is building his own town down in KZN and other ministers knowing they have access to millions and millions of Rands to spend probably lets them sleep well at night...

Don't be idiotic!

Even if that money was not earmarked for building, they could have dropped the e-toll system and build houses with it for the tens of millions of poor people they keep lying to every day - let alone the tens of thousands they are inviting into our country from abroad each and every month...

That money comes from the fiscus. When the budgets are put together, requests from each department's approvals are submitted. That money, had it not been allocated to transport, or had it not been guaranteed by the government (as it was), could have been put to better use. One of those uses is housing and basic infrastructure. It's not difficult to follow the logic of opportunity cost when put into context, and that's all that I'm doing. That money was not blanket-guaranteed to transport - they didn't simply have to find a way to spend their budget...

The fuels tax, upstream (oil, pipeline, refineries) and downstream (service stations) is more than adequate for the national upkeep of roads. It's no doubt that they've inappropriately allocated / spent those contributions, which is why they're expecting the taxpayer to pay twice for infrastructure that has not been maintained.

Italy has extolls on every single inch of highway. And they pay a fuel tax...
 
The wording is very specific if you ask me..

They haven't come close to selling even 600000. They've allocated that amount (give or take) to retailers etc.. so if we could find out how much stock the retailers hold, then we could get a much clearer number of etags actually sold.

If you count the number of corporations, such banks, retail companies, fleet services such as Avis, government agencies, such as police, and semi government such as municipalities, etc., you will probably find that these institutions bought more than 200, 000 - 400, 000 of these e-tags.

I will be very, very surprised if more than 100,000 individuals bought them....
