I find it very difficult to believe that smartphone users' expenditure on SMS/MMS increased.

Maybe it's all those contracts that give you hundreds of sms's even though you only use 5 of them a month.
 
About this research, as it is presented in the article:
Only providing the percentages makes it pretty useless.
Costs change all the time, data promotions are on all the time, so without the details of the methodology it is just smoke and mirrors.

I get far more sms's from banks, etc, than I used to.
 
In all this talk about data and smartphones one thing gets overlooked, one cannot have the full internet experience on a smartphone. This is not due to smartphones themselves but certain content which is easily available on an ordinary computer is not available at all on phones.
