Retired seven-times Formula One world champion Michael Schumacher suffered a head injury in a fall while skiing off-piste in the French Alps resort of Meribel on Sunday, an official said.

"He has been taken to a hospital in Moutiers," said resort director Christophe Gernigon-Lecomte.

The 44-year-old German was wearing a helmet and was conscious during the transport to hospital, he added, suggesting that Schumacher was less seriously injured than initial media reports indicated.

"He fell around 11.00am and hit a rock with his head," Gernigon-Lecomte said.

"It seems that he has suffered a head trauma, but I would not say how serious it is. He was conscious but very agitated while being taken to hospital."

Schumacher, who celebrates his birthday on January 3, is the most successful Formula One driver of all time with a record 91 victories among his achievements. He won his titles with Benetton and Ferrari.

He left the sport last year after a three-year comeback with Mercedes following an earlier retirement from Ferrari at the end of 2006. He lives in Switzerland with his wife and two children. – Reuters

The former racing driver's spokeswomen Sabine Kehm said in a statement: "Michael fell on his head when he was on a private skiing trip in the French Alps.

"He was taken to hospital and is receiving professional medical attention.

"We ask for understanding that we cannot give out continuous information about his health.

"He was wearing a helmet and was not alone. No one else was involved in the fall."

Lyon - Michael Schumacher, the seven-time Formula One champion, is in a coma and remains in a "critical" condition after striking his head in a ski accident in the French Alps on Sunday, the hospital treating him said.

The 44-year-old German was "suffering a serious brain trauma with coma on his arrival, which required an immediate neurosurgical operation", the hospital in the southeast French city of Grenoble said in a statement.

"He remains in a critical condition." Schumacher had been skiing off-piste in the upmarket Meribel resort, where he reportedly has a property, when he fell and hit his head on a rock, mountain police who gave him first aid said.

He was airlifted to a local hospital, then to the Grenoble facility. A specialist neurosurgeon from Paris was rushed in to oversee his treatment.

The director of the Meribel resort, Christophe Gernigon-Lecomte, had said just after the accident that Schumacher had been wearing a helmet and was "conscious but a little agitated" just after the accident, suggesting he had not received life-threatening injuries.

But when Schumacher then fell into coma, doctors realised the damage was worse than initially feared.

The two mountain police officers who gave first aid said Schumacher was suffering "severe cranial trauma" when they got to him and a helicopter was brought in to evacuate him within 10 minutes.

A renowned Paris neurosurgeon, doctor Gerard Saillant, was brought to the Grenoble hospital in a police car to take charge of the famous patient.

The hospital statement was signed by the facility's neurosurgeon, the professor in charge of its anaesthesia/revival unit, and the hospital's deputy director.

Schumacher was on a private stay in Meribel, according to his spokesperson. He is to have his 45th birthday next Friday.

Schumacher, who won the last of his world titles in 2004, definitively retired in 2012 in the Brazilian Grand Prix, in which he finished seventh, after an abandoned attempt to quit six years earlier.

Since his debut in 1991, the German towered over the sport, winning more Formula One world titles and races than any other. He had a record 91 wins and is one of only two men to reach 300 Grands Prix.

Best wishes to him for a speedy recovery. I would have thought that the dangers in F1 were a lot greater than in skiing - unfortunately he probably did too.

I am sure he was well aware of the dangers... Apparently he is quiet the expert skier too. Hope he gets through this okay!
 
Isn't it ironic that one of the fastest men in the world in one of what we expect to be the most high risk sports then gets injured in another sport that we all consider less dangerous.

Michael Schumacher is in a critical condition in a French hospital as a result of the head injury that he suffered in a skiing accident on Sunday.

A statement issued by Centre Hospitalier Universitaire de Grenoble on Sunday evening confirmed that Schumacher's injuries were very serious and that he had undergone emergency surgery.

It described Schumacher's condition as critical and said he was in a coma.

The statement added that Schumacher had suffered from a "head trauma with coma, which required immediate neurosurgical treatment."

The seven-time Formula 1 world champion fell while skiing in the French Alps and hit his head on a rock.

His injuries were sustained while skiing between two of the Meribel resort's toughest pistes.

Medical personnel attended to the 44-year-old, who was wearing a helmet, within minutes and he was airlifted to the nearby Moutiers hospital less than 15 minutes after the accident.

He was later transferred to the Grenoble hospital, which specialises in brain injuries.

We don't all consider it less dangerous... Especially off piste...

Not really. Skiing is the biggest killer of the wealthy after cocaine/heroin overdoses and crystal chandelier decapitations.
