New Mac Pro South Africa pricing, launch window

Quite a bit more expensive than was one to get direct from Apple, cost doesn't really make much sense. That and you also can't get the custom builds you could get from Apple without actually having the retailer go through Apple itself, which has always been an issue I've had with the Core distribution model, it's a pretty poor experience overall.

Errr... the cost makes perfect sense actually... $2999 at R10.85 to the dollar = R32,539.15 and the $2999 excludes sales tax. So add on 14% and you get R37,094.63. without any shipping costs.

Think that's acceptable (although still a LOT of money)

wish I knew when the large capacity ipad minis with retina display were going to be released here

For such a high end computer and they only have 256 GB storage as standard ?

BTW I hate the new design (rubbish bin), I thought the previous Mac Pro was beautiful

Its SSD storage, and these machines are designed to work with NAS type stuff.

looks nice until you see the price....pass

Looks like R2D2 haha

The eDustbin or the Darth Vader. :D In truth, the Mac Pro was always expensive. What Apple did to get it down to a smaller size and packing it with quite a lot of computing power is still incredible. The market segment will be photographers / videographers that require a fast integrated system. And before someone jumps up and down about: Why not use Windows / Linux? It is user preference.

It won't look the same, have the same Apple warranty or engineering.

Well you're right about that, but not in the way you think. The Mac Pro comes with 1 year warrantee (you have to pay $250 extra for 2 additional years), but the workstation level PC components you and me would go and buy from a shop generally come with 3 year warrantees standard - I checked the AMD FirePro products (same product used in the Mac Pro) and they have 3 year. Intel Server/Workstation boards usually have 3 years and are kick-ass engineering, I'd put them up against Apple any day of the week, and last time I checked Xeons came with 3 year warrantee. Any half-decent SSD come with 3-year warrantee.

Bear in mind the Mac Pro is really just stock components on custom PCBs. They aren't really anything magical or special. So I'm wondering - does Apple get 3 year warrantee on the components they put in this thing, give 1 year warrantees, then pocket the change people pay for the 3 year?

Edit: I'm not trying to bash Apple, just wondering why they don't give 3 year warrantee standard on what they pitch as a "professional product" (let's face it, Apple are going after Prosumer, not Pro) when everyone else in this market segment gives 3 years.
