Satya Nadella the new Microsoft CEO

Microsoft Corp named Satya Nadella as its next chief executive officer on Tuesday, ending a longer-than-expected search for a new leader after Steve Ballmer announced his intention to retire in August.

So, it's official then... In hindsight, it was always going to be him once Mulally pulled out. But the bigger news is Gates stepping down- it might mean that a Microsoft CEO is able to run the company without coercion to toe a certain line...

Mulally was never in, was he? It was just the press that made that story up and started to believe it.

Funny you should say "run without coercion" from Gates, seeing as Satya himself seems to have requested Gates be his technical advisor, and have a more direct influence on the company :)

There was never a way a external guy would have taken that post. not with both Gates and Balmer breathing down his neck.

But with his Background in the Cloud and Enterprise Group, you can see where Microsoft's focus will be.

MS is already entering the OSaaS era, soon to be most probably seen with Windows 10 (cloud-based OS), although this will be horrible with our broadband.

Satya Nadella represents the Return of the Geeks. He's first and foremost an engineer, a techie, a guy who deeply grasps the tech stuff. He didn't come in or rise through the business manager or sales & marketing ranks, so for many at MSFT he represents a return to the serious tech roots. Amidst all the pain of the last decade or so, the server and tools business has kept its head, and Nadella was part of that. Ballmer, otoh, was a sales and business guy. Btw, there are one or two South African veeps in the wings...

Their stocks apparently responded positively to his appointment.
