Yesterday I noticed that my line speed/sync speed was dropped from 4 meg to 3 meg. I logged a call with Afrihost as they manage the line as well and after some time got the reply that my line was unstable and because of that it was automatically downgraded to 3 meg. I then phoned Telkom as this sounded very suspicious and was informed by telkom that someone with a login from afrihost manually lowered the line speed/sync speed and when I logged a call it was manually changed to it's original state.

When phoning them to lodge a complaint I was put on hold and then disconnected

This does sound dodgy. Imagine if Afrihost did that to everyone they manage their lines for, they would automatically "gain" bandwidth without upgrading their IPC so they can sell more for the same bandwidth! I'm glad I switched over to a very cheap Web Africa Uncapped ADSL, especially with their new capped pricing as well.

This is why it's not worth it having your line handled by an ISP.

Ai Ai... that doesn't sound very nice. Ive heard about this magic of being able to log into your line and change the speeds, but never got around to finding out if its actually true. I still phone to up/down my speeds.

From a external location, log into client zone and within tweak my line select Stabilize my line.

:wtf: did I just read. talk about shady. one way to lower capacity required. devious. seems one needs to avoid an isp that does things like this.

Lol yea they did they same thing to me I was happily going on a full 2meg and then boom!!! 500kbps after 2-3 days they felt bad and out me on a 1meg sync I complained for about 2 weeks and the twitter team is actually useless denied everything and blamed it on a fault so eventually I believed them but I then thought and I remembered my friend telling me telkom changes his profile speed from 10meg to 6 or 7meg and he has to phone to change it back so I then phoned afrihost they couldn't help and also said let's wait for the fault to be resolved I then finally got through to that blady live support told the oak to change my profile speed back to 2meg router re-synced and done back on a full 2meg he was the only one that managed to fix it in 2 weeks of rubbish internet.

It doesn't work for most people

I agree, say it takes 3mins to complete, yet when I try it, it never seems to finish. Bit worried about the line speed being dropped, one wonders what else goes on behind the scenes while we pay fancy prices and get excuses about waiting for capacity etc.

WA is cheap for a reason.

And @OP you can stabilise your sync in clientzone. If your line is unstable it should sync at a lower rate automatically.

1st post wonder... I don't think Afrihost would deliberately do this. They have much more morals than other ISP's. stabilize your line via clientzone or it has been lowered due to the quality of your line in your area

Sorry to hear that you had this poor experience. It sounds a little odd though. To be honest, we're way too busy in our support centre to randomly drop line syncs for no reason. If you, however, have run Tweak My Line or Fix My Line, it will automatically lower your sync rate to the most stable setting.

Also, I do know of instances where Telkom technicians drop sync rates on an exchange to try to relieve congestion. For us there's no real benefit to doing so. Not only is the client bound to be upset at some point, as with this case, but at the end of the day, we really want people to get great speeds and bandwidth access to promote our brand.

Whatever may have happened though, I'm pretty sure there was no malicious intent :)
