R100,000 budget - thoughts on Audi A8 4.2L D2?

Yes "This thread is about the A8 D2" because if you have ever driven one, and heard the amazing sound of its 12 speaker Bose sound system you'll know why it is a waste of money to spend R100,000 on any other Audi, especially piddly two litre B7s with their worn out interiors. Life is just to short to waste time in lesser A cars, might as well pot around on a postman's single speed bicycle.

I was less impressed with the D3 and you can't get them for R100k so that is why this thread is not about them. It is about the Audi A8 D2 4.2 and why, if you are looking for a big German sedan for about R100k, you should consider it above a S-class or 7-series.

Might actually get one since I will need to replace my ageing Astra sometime soon and the budget will be, you guessed it, R100,000.
 
I mostly am, but this was a very rare A8 and I have only recently started to see one again on my daily commute. It brought back fond memories and I am toying with the idea of getting one.

Edit : D3 for about R100k!

I hope you have another R100k for repairs? Mind you, even if you do spend R100k on repairs, you still get a pretty awesome R200k car that beats any econobox for the same money.
 
Exactly, especially lesser cars like the A4 B7. But I am not so sure it will have that much to fix. My reason for saying that is I have a car that is currently over 220,000km and it has not cost me that much, certainly not R100k.

I bought a beemer few years back 123 000km for about the 100k mark.

Man was it a massive mistake..
I spent about 50k fixing the farking thing all the time,still was never right.

Always worried when it was going to break down and in which area.

Just got rid of the thing now.

Do yourself a favour, take look at all the cars on the back of a tow truck.

You will change your mind.

I will never buy a another German car again.
 
save your money or buy something smaller but more recent - especially with fuel costs.
 
So the way things currently are for me in terms is cars are as follow. I have a 2010 Corsa that has 40,000km on the clock, I drive it maybe once a week if it is that much, a little bit more in winter. I cycle to work and where ever I need to be. It is a very good looking driveway ornament.

My other car which my wife uses is a 2001 Astra with more than 220,000km in the clock. I occasionally use it weekends to go to cycle races, she uses it during the week and most of the time our daughter (16 months old) goes with her.

My thinking was to have her take the Corsa since it is safe, got ISO fix and what not and then get me a nice "Sunday" car that I use every now and then and for the heck of it. Should get about R40k for the Astra.

A C-class would be nice, but I might as well get something much nicer. So that is why I was thinking of the A8 or S-class. I am a bit worried about reliability but I seriously doubt they can be more unreliable and more expensive to keep on the road than what I have now.
 
Problems are the normal wear parts. Shocks, tires, brake sensors, management cpu's, etc. They seem to be in a whole other class of pricing come replace/repair time.

Had an E38, still the best drive on the road, but Yikes, maintenance. R16k for single new shock for air suspension. R2.5k for single tyre.

2nd Parts were available at stripper places, but becomes more difficult to find with each new year.

But still worth it, if only for Sundays. At least it was, until it it wasn't anymore.

(Almost R1500 at the pumps, each stop)
 
I drove an A6 4.2 Quattro for a while.

Expect to get 450km off your 82litres maximum in the city. You can do 10l/100km on the long road though as it basically sits at 1500rpm doing 120km/h but as a town car...not a ****.

I would rather advise buying a much newer A4 for the same money. Possibly even a diesel.

These motors will go on forever though so the mileage would hardly bother me.

Obviously a service is more expensive since it's double the amount of spark plugs etc but it's not too outrageous. The biggest problem remains the fuel really.

Maybe an A6 in the 2.8V6 would be a better middle ground Rouxenator?
 
What is the point of this thread? OP has no intention of buying a 4.2L A8 whatsoever yet is invoking time-wasting responses from people who think he is serious.

Apparently there is something wrong with the A4 B7 2.0L? And that they have poor stock sound and by now they must have worn out interiors?

I have no idea what has caused this sort of reaction to my thread and what's been discussed in it. This seems terribly childish, even more so because there is no reason for it.

In my thread, I posted that after having my 2.0 for 5 months, I am interested in a 2.0 T, especially because I miss the power of my previous 2.5 V6.

I get a sarcastic reply from the OP saying that I might want a 3.0 TDi in a few weeks time after the 2.0 T.

Another forumite then posts in my thread that he is interested in an '06 2.0 Avant. I comment on the different CD players in the B7s over the years, and that he should look for an '07 because it comes with the upgraded Concert double din CD player which supports MP3 CD, if that's what he wants.

I get a reply from the OP simply saying "Inferior audio." And then asking me "how far I've upgraded through the Audi ranks", and am I "still stuck at level A4 or are you in the A6 league already."

Meh, A6? Might as well drive a Polo or even worse, a A4 B7. They are just too common and oh so uniform.

It's a pity but I guess you guys are right, it is going to cost way more to keep a luxury car like the A8 on the road than my two econoboxes. Still a nice dream though, despite the fact that cars of that size will never, no matter what the age, be affordable for a pleb like me.

Edit : I did have my eye on a late 90's 7 Series for a while but I guess the same applies as with the A8. Those Beemers can be had for less than 50 grand.
